Ely bear researcher confirms Hope the bear’s death
September 27, 2011 at 10:29 am in Duluth News Tribune
A hunter shot the bear, whose birth was covered on the Web two winters ago, on the evening of Sept. 16, according to a post on the Facebook page for Lily, Hope’s mother. Continue Reading

Dead Inside, you said, “Animals are not overpopulating the planet, people are, and people are tearing down the wilderness to build more concrete jungles and ruining the animal’s natural environment. Anytime an animal comes into human territory it’s the direct result of human’s actions. Animals didn’t ask for people to come and invade their land and ruin everything for them. They don’t seek retribution or revenge. That’s what humans are all about, to destroy for no good reason.”
Isn’t this just a prime example of survival of the fittest and in accordance with the science of evolution? Humans have evolved to be the supreme being, and we can do whatever we desire because we are most powerful. Period. The consequences of evolution are depressing.

First of all, I have no problem with hunters or hunting. I understand the need for population control and everything, but can you really call it HUNTING when you lure the animal in with a bait pile and then kill it. What sport is there in that? It should be called WAITING not hunting. Did you really have to HUNT down the animal? It all seems a bit unfair! Just wondering.

I guess I’m not sure. It seems a bit different than luring them in with food. I have hunted but I’m not an avid hunter, which is why I ended my comment with “just wondering”. Please enlighten me so maybe I will better understand the decision to hunt using these means.

Actually, even Lynn Rogers supports baiting as a hunting practice.
With baiting, there a higher likelyhood of a clean kill…rather than just wounding the bear.

Baiting is a BS way to hunt. Anyone that says different isn’t a hunter and doesn’t deserve the privilege. I am a hunter and will not bait, getting a ‘kill’ isn’t that important. The best part of hunting is being outside and the pure enjoyment.

Animal calls & such are in-the-moment attempts at luring prey in for the kill. You’re relying on your skill knowing which lure to use, and and how to use it. One false tone, a wrong breath, anything and you’re SOL. In other words, it’s a skill.
Baiting is changing behavior over time to practically guarantee the desired outcome. It’s not sport, it’s a chicken-crap way to ensure you fill your tag.

To make hunting bears more challenging and interesting, maybe we could have a knife season…in addition to, or replacing the gun and bow seasons. Hey, if Davy Crockett could kill a bear with a knife…

I hope for his sake the hunter can stay anonymous ( but I doubt it).

There is no “Hope” for Lynn Rogers. He has gone from being the bear researcher I met back in 1980 to some kind of northwoods black bear version of the crazy cat lady. These bears are not HIS. Just because someone stuck a camera in a bear’s den and then gave the bears each some names to make them more palatable to the consuming public does NOT mean that THE BEARS wanted this.
Take a clue from Hope herself. Hope continually took that collar off. She was successful what, FOUR times? She didn’t want it there. Someone else did and it only served that person’s selfish purpose. If you are sincerely interested in watching bears then RISE UP FROM YOUR COMPUTER CHAIRS and get out into the woods! For anyone to declare that the adoring public is “devastated” by this is just ridiculous.
The debate over whether hunting is a viable pass time should be separate from this issue. The man legally took a black bear without a collar from what I’m reading. I say lesson learned. Leave the bears alone they don’t want us there anyway.

excuse me Polly, you may not be devestated but there are thousands of bear.org fanatics that are. just because you don’t understand something doesn’t mean its not important to others. maybe you should rise from your computer chair and quit being so selfish. your life isn’t the only one that exsists. everyone has their own interests.

inmyopinion; I understand what you are trying to get across here, and I will reply in a less harsh tone than you have taken. DEVASTATED? That’s a pretty strong word. I understand sad and depressed to hear the news but DEVASTATED? Your immediate attack on my ego of being selfish only serves to show me that you in fact are more concerned with your own agenda than that of the bears. THE TRUTH IS that Hope DID NOT want that collar on. She repeatedly RAN away from Lynn Rogers and didn’t want anything to do with him.

If people are devasted by the death of this bear, the blame falls squarely on Lynn Rogers shoulders.
The bear should have perished due to natural causes very early on but, Rogers intervened.
Then, he and his staff did everything in their power to make sure people that people DID become attached to this bear.
Of course, I’m sure it didn’t really hurt too much that in the process, the $700,000 debt of the NABC was decreased by $673,669, all by donations from the ‘fans’.
Clearly, reality says that if you are bear living in the great northwoods, your chances of living a long life are pretty much nil but, that was not the reality of the ‘fans’.

There will be more bears for the people to enjoy. At least you know the true cause of its death. Maybe donate her ‘ribs’ to Wisconsin DNR to study them for chemicals from man.

Maybe if Lynn Rogers would leave these bears alone already, they’d be a little more wary of human beings and less likely to wander into what clearly isn’t a natural source of food. Rogers is the one who fed this bear when she wouldn’t eat. And he’s the one who brought her back to her mother when she wandered off. He calls it “trust” on the part of the bear. I call it taking away the bear’s natural sense of caution around humans (and don’t tell me she didn’t know there was a person near the bait site.)

If this hunter had no clue that the bear at his bait site was Hope, and the DNR said earlier that without tags and/or a collar they wouldn’t be able to tell one bear from the other, and Rogers refuses to tag his bears so they can be identified, why did the hunter call Rogers and claim to have shot this particular bear? How did he (or Rogers or anyone else) know this wasn’t any other bear?
Something doesn’t add up. But I bet the story is good for a few more grand in the tip jar.

If the number of comments is any indication there is a lot more outrage over the wild bear some call Hope being killed, and Troy Davis who was executed in Georgia the other day.

Anyone else find it convenient that:
-a hunter killed the bear
-the hunter is anonymous
-the hunter has not contacted the media
-Rogers wants to protect the identity of the “hunter”
What proof do we have that:
-Hope is dead
-Hope was killed by a hunter
Oh, that’s right, the word of the camp of a shameless self-promoter.
I’m not saying its not possible, just he hasn’t helped his credibility at all over the years.

And just for the record, the headline is misleading. Neither Rogers nor anybody else “confirmed” anything other than that a bear was shot during bear hunting season. That’s the entire story.

Nope, bears ain’t included in that one.
Only people. Bears ain’t people.
If you look in the Old Testament, it even specifies what animals can/should be killed and eaten. Of course, you have to be Kosher to follow that part.

I think the mutiplying has already started- there are 3 cubs hanging around our garbage transfer station- they must be 2 year olds as mama leaves them to do their thing but is close enough to watch them. If they were younger she wouldn’t let thembe on their own and if they were older she wouldn’t be around.
