The problem is not with what the oil companies do, but their promises. “They”, being the oil companies, say they are environmentally friendly, have excellent safety records and will fix any problems. Well, history shows these promises are inaccurate. If the oil companies are so sure of their record, they should have no problem putting up millions of dollars in escrow to pay for things when they go wrong. After all, nothing will go wrong and they will get back all their money won’t they? As to the windmill scare in both this article and Mr. Hennen’s, where is your data? The old wind farms like Altamont were a hazard, but research in the most recent decade shows those concerns overrated. I have no disagreement that some birds do get hit by wind turbines, but at what rate? Lastly, as this article and Mr. Hennen both failed to point out, migratory waterfowl are NOT regulated by the state, but rather fall under International Treaty with Canada and Mexico, which is why the US attorney is involved and why the fines and the pit issue doesn’t fall under state purview.

OSHA Area Director Tom Deutscher said his office handled 14 workplace deaths in the past year, and half of those were in the oil and gas industry. Deaths due to traffic accidents in the oilfield counties have skyrocketed. And the deaths of 28 birds is a big issue. Someone sure has their priorities screwed up.

I’m fairly confident the oil companys will fare just fine financially in spite of being required to not destroy the environment.
I wonder how many people who whine about how mean we are to the oil companies would object to a film of sludge covering their property? My guess is all of them.
Frank, you’re talking about two separate issues that have nothing to do with each other.

Teacher pensions are heavily invested in the oil companies; why are some people so mean to teachers?

Oil companies know the importance of the oil reserves waiting to be harvested in ND. Let them pay for the infrastructure they are destroying. They have deep pockets. WalMart is willing to pay for roads, traffic lights, and whatever else is warranted so that they can set up shop in town. They know they will reap rewards hundredfold.
Call the oil companies’ bluffs. Make ‘em spend the money to keep things as they have been before they got here……or tell ‘em to take a hike.
