Goodrich sold to United Technologies
September 23, 2011 at 1:43 am in The Jamestown Sun
For the eighth time a new name will hang on the walls at the manufacturing plant located north of Jamestown along N.D. Highway 20. Goodrich Corp., the owner of the plant, was sold to United Technologies in a deal reported to be worth $16.4 billion. Continue Reading

note that it is not just the plant that was sold, it was a buyout of the whole Goodrich company. hopefully, thought, the upper management at United Tech has a different philosophy regarding shipping work over to India. If they continue shipping work to India, there might not be much left of the Jamestown plant in a few more years.

Wow, do some research before spouting the negative over and over.
The plant in Jamestown itself has only changed hands twice. Western Gear merged with Becor Western and then when the parent company went bankrupt it was sold to Lucas. Since then, the Lucas name changes were the parent company being reorged or sold including the TRW and Goodrich name changes.
Also, even a little time looking at what the company does, you would know that they primarily make luggage handling systems for Boeing.
For someone who has nothing but vitriol for Jamestown, some fact checking may be in order.

OK, so explain the identity crisis this plant seems to have. The article clearly stated EIGHT name changes since 1971.

The people that work there don’t have any identity crisis. They work hard and produce a good product. It doesn’t matter what name is on the building.

it’s really quite simple. The plant in Jamestown has never been bought or sold by itself. The name changes have very little to do with the Jamestown plant, other than it makes good money for it’s parent company. The reason for the numerous name changes is that the parent companies have been merged or bought out. Companies are merger or takeover targes when their earnings are good, and stock price is not too high. In fact, that’s why United Tech bought Goodrich, to improve their earnings per share. That is why Lucas bought Western Gear, that’s why TRW bought Lucas Varity, etc.

actually, if it were a big money loser, why would anybody want to buy it? If it’s a money maker, then it’s a target for buyout or takeover.
and by the way, there’s almost no military products coming out of that plant anymore. It’s almost entirely commercial products, and it has been that way for about 10 years.

Hopefully United Tech won’t close this location. Jamestown’s economy would be decimated if this plant closed and 500 jobs were lost.

It should be pointed out that the only reason Western Gear ever located a plant in Jamestown in 1970 was that Senator Milton Young promised them defense contracts if they opened here.
Once again, more proof that nothing ever happens in Jamestown without everyone’s tax dollars being milked.

Right, and large companies don’t build in Fargo or Bismarck because the cities cut them large tax breaks and exemptions. How is a large tax break, that takes money out of the coffers any different than getting grants from tax money?

It seems to be far more widespread in Jamestown plus the incentives seem to be working in Fargo. Compare the populations since 1960. Fargo has almost tripled in size, West Fargo is up 10 fold, and Jamestown will soon be less than they had in 1960.

Fredster. “Doubter” is intended to imply a lack of trust of the intent of some individuals that post comments. Your negativity and lack of substance is quite tiresome. There are many reasons for Fargo’s growth compared to that of Jamestown. Just like there is within Jamestown’s history of existence compared to other smaller communities in the vicinity. You are making this up as you go along.

Hey fred what exactly is your deal with Jamestown anyways. According to my reasearch you don’t even live here. Jamestown is a great place to live, we may be stuck as far as population goes, and we don’t have all the businesses and things to do that fargo and bismarck have, but there are alot of advantages to that as well. Have you ever thought that not all people enjoy living in a larger community, I love the size of Jamestown, sure it would be nice to have a few more businesses but I don’t mind the drive when I need to. Fargo may be growing as well as West Fargo, but there sure has been alot on the news lately about crimes in that area as well. You see with such a growth also comes more problems and as far as I am concerned fargo can have it. So if you don’t mind could you please stop harping on Jamestown. Thank you

I didn’t know it took “research” to determine I don’t live in jamestown. I’ve always said I moved from jamestown a long time ago, so you haven’t discovered anything.

You are right, there are reason’s for Fargo growing and Jamestown being stagnant. The main reason is Fargo makes things happen, Jamestown tries to make people believe that things are happening when they aren’t.
Statistics don’t lie. We can look at census data or sales tax figures. Either will show that I know what I’m talking about. I’m not being negative, I’m being truthful and a great deal of Jamestown wants to ignore the truth and I’m not about to let you.

Fred. Fargo has the history of being a geographical hub since its founding. It has a major public university and a sister city across the river with a major public university. There are also several private colleges in the metropolitan area. I believe Fargo has the most utilized airport in the state. Fargo borders a more populous state and the region surrounding Fargo contains more and more populous “smaller” communities in both ND & MN than does Jamestown. Size and growth create size and growth. Bismarck is the state capital and other cities in the west are hubs based on fewer small communities. These could be considered “micro” regions in that they attract residents migrating from smaller towns. Jamestown and Valley City, although larger, fall into this category with Fargo as the hub. I could go on and on. There is always more any community could explore in order to promote growth but I honestly believe you are being purposefully negative. And you really have no idea as to the economic reason the company has changed hands and whether it is profitable or not. And I will apologize if I am wrong, but didn’t you criticize the new hospital a while back? Is the new hospital not some attempt to improve the city?
