Citizenship class gets grant

WORTHINGTON Worthington School District 518 Community Education is one of the three entities state-wide that started receiving part of a federal grant administered by the Minnesota Literacy Council (MLC) for long-term citizenship capacity building last year. Continue Reading

Congratulations to Mr. Fiola and the Community Education team for securing this grant money! Grants like this are extremely difficult to get and the competition is fierce among communities, large and small. The grant funds will go a long way towards helping immigrants pursue their American dream of citizenship. What was particularly heartening was to read that a young man who benefited from the program earlier is now “paying it forward” by now assisting others. That’s the American spirit! Kudos to all involved and good luck moving forward.

In 1991, 170 people attended adult English classes through the school district. That number increased to 334 in 2001, and 615 in the 2010-11 school year ending in the summer 2011.

Another example of something stupid I’m stuck on! Again, not on the taxpayers dime. If they need to learn English, it should be their reasonably. We need to stop domestic foreign aid.

Their not going anywhere. Most people are use to immigrants, legal or otherwise, living in the area and do not care. The younger generation grew-up knowing no other circumstance. This is norm to them.
The only sect that cares are generally older and appear unhappy with life in general – as is evident by the consistent tenor of posts by the frequent gripers on this site. Crying for the “the good ole days” is the first sign they are gone forever.

So true Buford Blue. There is another Pi Po article that ran yesterday about the children and school. http://www.twincities.com/ci_18925640.

The truth is that the older wiser ones have seen how badly they have been and continue to be cheated. I care about how it affects my offspring! As some here have said, they don’t, or are too young, to know any better. That I agree with! I do know better and can only hope that some of you too young to know, take heed! This country didn’t get in this fiscal nightmare for no reason! It was brought about by many pee-poor (stupid) ideas like this one… that’s why I’m stuck on stupid!!!

Deano – I have NO idea how old you are chronologically, since you don’t put your birth year in your profile. (Why not???) I’m probably older (chronologically) than you are.. am proud to say I’m 62. I just hope I’m never as OLD as you are in your thinking. Not all of us “old” people are reactionary or close-minded and many of us have seen alot. It’s time to drag yourself kicking and screaming into the 21st century. And give up on the “stuck on stupid” reference. You’ve used it recently in several posts and it’s old and tired and makes you sound like a martyr. Martyrs are so 15th century.

I have noticed that you take the time to rebuke my posts. It seems you are not rebuking what I’ve said as much as you are me personally! I do express my opinion about issues that I think are very important to today’s problems. Unlike you, I don’t just post to slap someone’s back, you know, that’s good, nice job, no problems here, YES MAN! I know you get the green checks that way, but that is not my goal. We have real problems that need real thought and real solutions. Being a YES MAN does little good, probably makes things worse! Immigration is a huge problem for this country, but if you want to defend it go ahead if you can. Trying to tell me how to think is wasting your Green Nosing time!
