First Wrenshall lost a couple years, now Carlton loses a year. Hmm….let’s think about this.
When I attended Carlton for a time back in the 90s we knew the district was in trouble. Even back then we asked higher-ups why we didn’t consolidate at least with Wrenshall, or even smarter, combine the four Carlton County schools that are all within spitting distance of each other.
The reply? “That would ruin tradition!”
It’s time for the people of east Carlton County to get their heads out of their posteriors, realize unless they can make some immediate and impressive population turnarounds, it’s time to consolidate. There’ll raise a few problems with conferences, namely the Polar League, but if popular activities are being cancelled, that’s what we call “a clue” that something is wrong and needs immediate action.
But then again maybe they’re just taking a page from the ISD 709 playbook and not admitting there’s a problem until it’s too late.

As a mother of one of the kids that was a regular at the practices you are fighting so many different things at this point in time. One of the biggest is interest, the funding is there for sports, but the interest doesn’t exist as it did in the past. Kids are being forced more and more now to pick a sport and focus their energies on that sport. Another issue in Carlton is size, and I don’t mean just numbers on a team, the only kids that are interested in the sport are the ones with size to them, and quite honestly, that is with good reason. Lastly, you have kids that do not want to dedicate their time to sports and other extra-curricular activities. Priorities are different now in kids than they ever have been. Many coaches will tell you they see a drop in participation numbers starting at about 14 or 15. There are more activities for kids now than there ever was and everyone competes with that.
