Turnberg: The pleasure and pain of TV news
September 3, 2011 at 7:00 pm in INFORUM
Nothing gets people riled up like messing with their television lineup. When “Wheel of Fortune” is pulled from the air for the state high school tournaments, when there are too many weather cut-ins, or when your favorite anchor is no longer in the anchor chair, the phones at the station start ringing off the hook.

Interesting how folks can read one thing and have differing opinions. First column? Hated it. Second? Same. Bullying column? Good grief…more drivel that has been written a gazillion times.
Today…I liked. Although one would expect the nature of the content, it was interesting to read personal touch. I think it would have been interesting to interview a few others for their thoughts….Marv Bossart comes to mind…or even Kevin Weaver (regarding his rememberances of growing up with Bill Weaver)…but, I liked this column.

I write my comments as a former English teacher (creative writing).
I applaud the author for writing her column, I always like to see people writing. However, her first three articles really have lacked substance. If a student of mine wrote, “I like candy”, and left it like that in the essay, I would say “it is not enough! WHY do you like candy?”.
I would hope the author of these essays would put more substance in her articles. And I hope she keeps on writing!

I’d say this time we got something short, shallowly written, but true. It’s not like I didn’t know what she was going to say, but at least I got reminded. It’s just too bad that every article she writes is a “poor me” thing. It’s as though she expects us to pat her on the back for doing what she did as a career. I’m not on board with that.

I agree that so far the articles have been about her, but I understand. If I had been through that ordeal, I would use my first articles to vent as well. It’s only human. I think and hope that as time goes by the subjects will change to other issues.
Hot debate. What do you think?

With Netflix, I have the opportunity to go back and watch all the episodes of some of my favorite TV shows. I’m amazed how “uninteresting” the first few shows of most series are. Seems like it takes awhile to get a rythm and find what really works. Is the same true of columnists?
I’d say this is her best column so far. Maybe she’s starting to find “her words” and “her voice”. I’ll keep reading awhile longer and either enjoy it or stop reading.
The Forum already has several columnists who I just never read. And I know there are others who never read those that I like to read. If she doesn’t connect with enough, she will be gone. Until then, it shouldn’t be that hard for people to either read or skip over it.

The way print media, mainstream TV etc is crashing world-wide (Internet, liberal bias etc) God Almighty wouldn’t make it as a columnist/newsreader in today’s world!

I see the Forum is deleting comments again. What a shame.

This column really should have been much longer because it could have gone in so many more directions. I remember working at KVLY in the mid-90′s during the HS tournaments. People had to work extra shifts just to answer the complaints from people calling in. Good times.
It feels like Michelle is getting into the swing of this column, I hope they keep getting better.

Now days the only reason I tune in at 6 or 10 is to catch the weather report and there is a 50% chance that might be wrong, but that’s just the way it is when it comes to the weather. The liberal slant of the big 3 is more than I can take so I wont watch those news shows. And I won’t comment on the Prime Time TV Shows as it’s a waste of time…

Unfortunately, another undeveloped article by Michelle. Although she inserts her own experience, there is no followup. Mentioning her kids experience, and then not saying what is different now since she is out of that market. Referencing what she made back when she started, but doesn’t react to what anchors make now.
I find it hard to follow, and without any real point of view, or new knowledge. Isn’t that what we want to read in our newspapers. The Forum knows what it is doing though, I keep reading even with disappointment… week after week.

the Forum is a Joke. Censoring and changing Formats,Fluff, touchy feely .get real. Handing down Leadership of the only widely circulated printed News Source to a wanna be ‘with it’ Hippie type won’t fly even in ya you betcha Fargo. Sell the Paper to smebody with guts enough to print the news without wanting to inject their slant on everthing..
