GET READY TO RUMBLE: Center rumble strips added as safety measure on N.D. roads
August 16, 2011 at 9:50 am in Grand Forks Herald
Long a staple on the shoulders, warning wayward drivers that they’re headed for the ditch, rumble strips soon also will occupy the center line on all paved, two-lane roads in North Dakota. Continue Reading

I noticed these on 81 on my way to Grafton on Sunday. Super annoying!

These rumble strips are a very good thing in the winter if the road is ice and snow covered and you have to travel. It saved my bacon last March on a road north of Williston. It was the only way I knew where the center of the road was! Good idea!!

It was a great idea. One wonders how many lives could have been saved if they had them all along. IMHO2, why do they annoy you? Do you have a hard time staying in your lane?

Not at all. I don’t drive that road very often, and when I do, I always wind up passing a few cars. That’s where the annoying part comes in. I agree, they are a good idea for safety reasons…they are just annoying to drive over every time you pass a truck or slower driver.

Hard to get used to at first, but you soon see the tremendous safety value! People are tired and distracted and I believe these will grab people’s attention before they drift across the center. Good idea!!

I too think they would be somewhat annoying when I go to pass another vehicle; but if they can be proven to save lives I can put up with them.

I think they’re GREAT!!! Was in an accident a few years ago in which my best friend was killed. The other driver fell asleep at the wheel, crossed the center line, and hit us head on. If only these had been on that stretch of highway he’d still be alive and our lives would be so much different.

One thing I’ve never understood up here though is why we don’t have our lines in fluorescent yellow like down south. In the winter the white all but disappears. Not a big problem on interstates, but sometimes on two lane highways whent thee’s been a lot of snow and you’d really like to know where the pavement ends.

No kidding. Whenever it rains in Fargo, good luck seeing the road!

Our lines are painted with fluorescent paint here in Polk County.

A motorcyclist told me that they are a bit troublesome overall, and especially after rain. It seems that even if the road is dry, the holes retain moisture.
Also, I wonder if during Spring, when there is a lot of melting/freezing, if we are setting the stage for more potholes?
I do agree that they are a plus for safety…
