Graffiti on the Worthington VFW sign appeared overnight and was first reported Monday morning. Because the sign hangs high over the sidewalk, the vandalism was likely done from the roof of the building. The nearby Elks Lodge also had graffiti marks, a source said. Continue Reading

Graffiti is in every town in every state. It is not just a local problem. Children who have access to spray paint and poor parental supervision are those who are usually to blame. The real measure of a community is not the amount of graffiti it receives but what is does about it when it happens. Worthington is very proactive and quickly responds to Graffiti, by removing it and attempting to catch those that have done it.

Breathe in….. Breathe out….. Don’t hyperventilate. I know it may come as a shock to some of you; but yes, graffiti is everywhere and no it does not always mean a gang is responsible.
Most of the time it is the act of a single child who’s parent don’t know where he is and the child has no respect for others. Please try to contain your fear and not get carried away into fantasy land where gangs of graffiti marking goblins lurk under your bed.

Took a couple deep ones, dam near passed out! Seriously though what are all these hundreds of kids going to do here say 10-15 years down the line? Work at swift, not many. Are they really going to get the education to move on to bigger and better? Not really there either. Work at the grocery store? Not! That my friend is a recipe for gangs! That really has happened to many places, look a little south and you shell see, been going on for decades! I know, that’s ok, no sweat! But if the past is any indication of the future we need to do some changing soon…

Ok, time to yet again point out the obvious to those of you who can’t see the writing on the wall (yes, pun intended). Take a look at the vandalism, a good look. It doesn’t say Billy loves Susie, or class of 2012, or any of the other “non-gang” graffiti we have all seen on barns, water towers ect. This is gang graffiti, period! Misguided, poor parental supervision, or whatever other sugar coated name you want to use, it’s still gang type beahvior. With that comes all of the other things we have been reading about all summer. Ask anyone who has been a victim of these thugs and I’m sure they won’t be as forgiving as some of you who choose to take a deep breath and look the other way. Let’s quit blaming the Globe for reporting what’s happening; and don’t speak for the Veterans who’s place of solitude and fellowship has just been spit upon. No, I’m sure they aren’t afraid of these little thugs but don’t act as if this is no big deal. Gang behavior such as graffiti leads to other things. Great post Deano!

One random bit of graffiti and you guys imply the world is coming to an end, the city’s being taken over by gangs, and Worthington’s youth have no future. Give us all a break.
Before you jump (again) to some ridiculous conclusions, let’s wait to see if the police are able to catch the perpetrators to establish if they’re really a “gang”. It might just be the kid next door out on a lark. It could be YOUR kid! Or some other “thug” you might know.
It’s clear the Globe crime desk did a GREAT job of getting you all riled up to the point you make these wild exaggerations, with doomsday predictions.
You are, I’m guessing, NOT experts in decoding gang graffiti, or squiggles of any kind. On the off chance you are, then help the cops out and contribute something positive to the community.
As Calvin said, take a deep breath… and lighten up. You’re attempting to make a mountain out of a molehill.

“YOUR kid! Or some other “thug” you might know.” Who’s all riled up??? The mountain (The Obvious) is not being made by any of us here! The truth is just as hard for me to swallow as it is for you. Nobody is making anything up here, as hard as that may be to accept! It is actually happing. It isn’t just one random bit of graffiti, it is a whole Series of lawlessness that’s been going on for years, and the perpetrators here are digging their own mole-hole. Some of you may be upset that I post this but this is just my opinion with no malice intended. Everyone wants to post about how it’s gang this, gang that, and bad parental supervision, etc. But did anyone stop to think about where the graffiti was done? At the VFW! I come from a long family history of veterans and to put graffiti on the memory of those veterans?! I’M JUST SAYING…….

The vets have gone through much worse. A bunch of illegible scribblings can’t begin to overshadow the service the vets have done for our country. What that punk(s) did has no honor and will be taken care of soon and will be nothing but a distant memory, except by those who have this irrational obsession that everything adds up to illegal immigration.

If pointing out the facts is drama then I guess I’ll proudly accept the drama queen award. Pat e — When it comes to this graffiti incident, you don’t have the facts. Nor did the Globe. The cops will investigate and do the actually fact-finding. All you have is assumptions which you would like us Globe readers to accept as facts. That’s not going to happen. Most of us are not interested in your conspiracy theories or innuendoes.
Who could have committed this?
Was it Spiderman? Superman? A hot air balloonist? How could anyone possibly get up that high!? My theories are just as sound as yours, and that’s not saying much.
Leave the authorities to do their work (unless you can add some valuable assistance). You are once again demonstrating your drama queen side, for which you wear the crown proudly and unashamedly.
If the police find out something concrete, I hope the Globe will then do a follow up story.

I have been a victim of this exact annoyance. Where are my molehill mountains? They were then what they are now. A nuisance, hardly worth mentioning. It was what it was, and I moved on. I didn’t lock myself up in the basement looking for evidence in the local news source that the world is being taken over by gangs and illegal immigrants and using every story that seemingly supports those irrational obsessions and think, “ah ha! See there!”
I just assumed that it was some dumb young person with a dumb idea and a can of spray paint. I guess I am more optimistic than I thought I was.

Pat e – you are making assumptions. Throughout your posts you assume that because the graffiti looks like gang graffiti then it must be the work of a gang. This is completely false and very poor judgment. The vast majority of the local kids you would call gang members do not even measure up to the definition of a “wanna be”. Many kids mimic things they see on TV, internet and so on think that what they are doing is cool.
Look back at the 50’s and 60’s when kids idolized the mob and rock stars. Dressing like Elvis did not make you Elvis, nor did dressing and talking like a mobster from the movies make you a mobster. The kids in town that wear cowboy hats, boots and drive trucks are not necessarily Cowboys. Use a little common sense. This may be a shock to you but kids that play war and act like Soldiers, are not in the military nor are they a threat to the community.
The only one I can think of that would agree with your logic would be Chicken Little, and guess what – the sky is not falling.

The last I knew, this is a comment\ opinion board. Not A Fact Finding Court Of Law!! If there are any assumptions made here I’d say that fits right in here a lot better then your personal attacks on people for having a comment\ opinion\ assumption. Everyone, please do not buy in to Pat e’s hysteria! His logic is flawed. He would have you believe that all graffiti is gang related. He is wrong. Even if it looks like it might me gang related the facts do not support his position.
I urge you to go back and read his prior postings in other articles. You will see a pattern of bad reasoning and misapplied principles. His posts are almost always filled with fear, exaggerations and misleading information. He takes one part of a story and twists it to support his narrow and skewed views of the world and this town.
We live in an extremely safe community. Worthington is a great place to raise kids and enjoy life. Pat e is welcome to have his opinion and views but we do not have to believe them. We do not have to accept his reality. We do not have to live in the messed up world he claims exist.

Well Calvin, you are making alot of assumptions; about me personally, my views of the world and Worthington, and about who I am. I won’t fall for the typical liberal attacks so feel free to continue bashing me. You say you welcome my opinion but you really don’t. My original post said nothing that you are accussing me of. YOUR first post is the one that tried to poo poo this as not a big deal. Is it the end of the world? No but the reality is it can lead to more dangerous things.

what pat said!!!!!!! Why is the obvious truth uncomfortable? Quit the denial and all work together to condemn and remove the undesirable and encourage the desirable. Statistically, immigrants are responsible for the majority of unpleasant stuff in the community, not all, but most. This is proven fact. At least for the stuff that I call “unpleasant”. Now what you may call “bad” might be different. I am referring to what I read in the police logs, see in my travels around town, and articles in this newspaper. I would invite anyone to keep a running tally of articles and who the persons are in those articles. I have been doing that and the statistics arent manipulated or lying. Immigrants are having an effect on worthington, both great and bad. Learn it, Live it, Love it!

Just because someone collects items from one biased source, doesn’t prove anything, except that the collector is obsessive and insecure.
If I collect orange pop bottles from one store, does that mean that is all the bottles there is because I have receipts to prove that is where I got the bottles? Certainly not. That is stacking the facts to match an opinion, which is not scientific or accurate.

No matter how you cut it, this is hate speech. It has been the reasoning behind countless atrocities throughout the centuries. It is propaganda. It is a lie. It is an attempt to avoid taking personal responsibility by blaming a specific group of people for the problems shared by everyone.
Cutting out newspaper articles and counting stories do not accurately reflect the truth. That is not research. That is not complete. It is an attempt to create fear and support for a hateful ideology.

No, It Is Not Any Of That! It is simply citizens trying to protect themselves from illegal and wrongful acts, of which the government fails to do!!! Worthington, as is and as has been, at least since 1983 based on illegal and wrongful acts! Read today’s article “No amnesty for illegal immigrants” Paul Westrum, Albert Lea, does good!!! You should NOT be proud of that, and there is no argument against it….it is not hateful to want to keep what is rightfully yours and protect yours from the oppression brought about by wrongful immigration. What right do illegal aliens have here!

What point is that? Calvin is the most self-contradicting person I’ve ever seen post here. He says everybody has the right to an opinion but as soon as a person posts what he disagrees with he attacks. Not with valid points or arguments for his side of an issue but buy trying to degrade the poster personally. Most know by now way that is, because there is no valid argument in favor of illegal img. It’s amazing how WILD we get with this issue…I’m not saying it’s OK for anyone to vandalize any property.
But after reading all these posts…which I respect everyone’s opinion. There is one sad tought in my mind.

Any words on this case? It’s too bad a person’s LIFE isn’t as valuable as a vandalized building!!!
I’m just very dissapointed and sadden for this family, who have no news on Lucia.
C’mon people….we are all humans and have loved ones, don’t we??? I’m willing to help with this case. This family has my support, but I guess I would need some kind of support from local authorities!
