Fighting Sioux nickname meeting may face snag
July 20, 2011 at 9:55 am in Grand Forks Herald
A planned meeting with NCAA officials next week about the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname may hit a snag because of the death of North Dakota Senate Republican majority leader Bob Stenehjem. Continue Reading

This has never been anything more than political posturing on the part of the “ND delegation.” An attempt to mollify the pro-side by saying “We’re doing all we can to keep the name.” Fact is, there is a settlement, legally binding, which Carlson conveniently ignored when he introduced his bill. The NCAA is holding a royal flush, ND, a pair of deuces. The former is not going to bend, the latter will return to ND, blather a bunch of meaningless clichés, and wiat for the end of the nickname.

Look! See the ND Republican leaders backpedaling. Tell them that is not an effective way to stay in shape. The 103 million dollar “Fighting Sioux” curse strikes again! And so it goes…..

Living proof that you cannot fix stupid. And boy if you aren’t the epitome of it. Don’t know how many times someone has to tell you that you are factually incorrect about calling it the “Fighting Sioux curse” before you get it through your thick skull.
I will repeat what I have said before….The Fighting Sioux won every single one of their D1 hockey championships as the Fighting Sioux. That is when they played in the Barn. While it is correct that they have not won since the Ralph was built….It has nothing…I repeat….NOTHING…..to do with the nickname. The 103 million Ralph Engelstad Arena curse exists. Your “curse” does not.

I’m guessing there’s no nickname or REA curse. The sports talk shows introduce these curse type debates with individuals and teams all the time. I expect that it’s done for ratings and all in fun. I hope carcassparker is coming from the ESPN approach rather than believing in some supernatural curse, because the latter would be a little far-fetched. One thing is undebatable. Hockey championships take some luck. A hot goalie can beat a statistically better team. It happens somewhere every weekend. When it happens at the Frozen Four, atUND’s expense, we tend to forget this point, and blame it on all kinds of things, including some ridiculous curse. I wish this was over, but I wish it could stay real (and more polite, stmchsrude) in the meantime.

There were emails between Shaft and Carlson obtained through the open records law that show REA’s Jody Hodson was invited to the NCAA and included in the group characterized by Shaft and Carlson as ND’s “biggest guns” aimed at the NCAA. Why does the media not investigate the connection between the REA and Carlson, who has said many times he really doesn’t know why he came up with the nickname law in the first place. We the taxpayers, need to know why REA is included in so many meetings involving Carlson and the nickname law. Carlson also refused to release his emails about the nickname law, what a hypocrite after he demanded all of President Kelley’s, what is Carlson hiding, what is he afraid the people will learn about his REA connnection in saving the nickname? Why is the North Dakota media hiding this from the people and not investigating this ?

Good point! Why does the mainstream media (newspapers and television) only report what is in the involved agencies press releases? That is because investigative reporting is beyond the abilities of local media. They reiterate the talking points handed to them. Not unlike Fox (fixed) News. The reactionary rightwing media tends to avoid any controversy or conflict with reactionary rightwing politicians. The whole story almost never is revealed. Most of us only see the ever-so-small tip of the iceberg. If you want investigative reporting, sorry but you will have to do it on your own. And so it goes…..

Talking points are not a sole occurence to the right slanted news agencies. It doesn’t matter what source you get your news from, you are only getting the tip of the iceberg that particular columnist or reporter wants you to get. It isn’t so much news as “propoganda” from EVERY source. News agencies no matter their name have lost all credibility in this country.

The Herald is never going to investigate the Carlson/REA connection because they are afraid of the REA. They don’t want to lose their free tickets to the REA events.

Hey…..news flash!
The REA is a 100 million dollar facility that was bought and paid for by Ralph Engelstad. Remember?
UND cowards did not have the backbone to tell Mr. Englestad to his face that they wanted to change the logo. Now that he is gone the jackals at UND and NCAA attack. Like the petty little cowards they are.
The REA has a vested interest…..why wouldn’t they be involved?

Admit it….they act like the cowards they are.
They could have told Mr. Englestad they didn’t want his building. Now that he can’t defend himself you all find your courage.
If the name and logo is changed by the cowards at UND and the NCSS, the Englestads should chain the doors and let it fall apart. Or, maybe all you socialists can demand that the government build another one….oh yeah…that won’t work…..you don’t have any MONEY. You have never created anything.
If you are looking for Adolf, try the NC$$…plethora of PC goosesteppers over there.

Calling Ralph Engelstad “Adolf” is really dumb and ignorant. The man has given more money to help other people than most of us can even imagine. And that’s just the things we know about. To compare him to a psychopathical murderer is just downright ridiculous. And all of this over a team nickname….makes me sad.

I’m really astonished that you have so many negatives from that comment. You would think the nickname opponents who are so concerned with others feelings and the impact that words have would consider the comparisons of Mr. Engelstad to Adolf Hitler quite pathetic and really quite contradictory. Evidently, it’s only hostile if it doesn’t fit into your narrow minded positions.

In 1988 it was revealed that Engelstad had thrown two parties for Imperial Palace employees held on the birthday of Adolf Hitler, one in 1986 and again in 1988. Public outcry over these parties and furor over an extensive collection of Nazi and Axis Power memorabilia, including automobiles, weapons and propaganda, launched Engelstad into media scrutiny. Further investigation by the Nevada Gaming Control Board revealed that 500 bumper stickers that read “Hitler Was Right” were printed at the Imperial Palace’s print shop. Inclusion in his automobile collection of vehicles formerly owned by Hitler and Italian dictator Benito Mussolini drew further criticism.
The Nevada Gaming Commission levied a $1.5 million fine upon Engelstad for the negative publicity the events had brought to the state’s reputation. Until this time the only higher fine ever levied was against the Stardust Casino for letting the Chicago Mob skim the casino (they lost their license).

This logo supporters are now reduced to name calling? “Coward”, “petty, little cowards”, “jackals”, “socialists”, “Adolph”, “PC goosesteppers” are used in two posts by David above. Having found the attempt at rational argument a failure, the true colors emerge. Name calling is the last refuge of the impotent! And so it goes…..

The problem is you are incapable of understanding a rational argument.
What do you call someone who does not have the courage to confront a person to their face and worse than that….attacks him in his grave?
Cowardly seems to fit. Maybe you have a better descriptor?

As for the “socialist’ label.
In reference as to why the logo opponents did not at the time, and have not since, built their own facility to replace the REA.
The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.
“Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979-1990 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975-1990. In a speech to the Conservative Party Conference on October 10, 1975, she spoke strongly against socialism:
“And I will go on criticising Socialism, and opposing Socialism because it is bad for Britain—and Britain and Socialism are not the same thing. (…) It’s the Labour Government that have brought us record peace-time taxation. They’ve got the usual Socialist disease—they’ve run out of other people’s money.”
By the early 2000s, this statement was paraphrased: “The trouble/problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.” In 2008-2009, many Americans were worried that Barack Obama would add socialist programs as president of the United States. The Thatcher quotation (slightly incorrect) was printed on T-shirts.”

Why isn’t the Herald investigating UND professors and administrators attending nickname protests and flying/busing hither and thither on the taxpayer dole? Why isn’t the Herald reporting on UND professors and administrators accusing students of being racists and lecturing on how “racist” the nickname and logo are instead of teaching? Truly, this must be a most diabolical conspiracy that somehow benefits the “military industrial complex.” The anti-nickname crowd has no perspective apart from its apoplectic, synapse-impaired “Ralph was a nazi”, “the nickname and logo are racists because we say so”, “anyone who approves of the nickname and logo is a racist” funny speak. Such cognitive desolation is only natural where people have been doing the same thing for 30 years and have not had a fresh thought during that time and are bored out of their minds. And so it goes…….

You know, in my personal experience with Native American relatives, friends, and colleagues, I have never met a single one who is against the Sioux nickname. In fact, my cousins’ reply was “It’s the white guys problem, just like money and sticks shoved to far where they cannot be retrieved.” NCAA fits that category just fine, with the corrupt ideas they come out with and more rules than anyone needs. But regardless, racism does not come from pride in a nickname or logo. Nazi acts do not come from donating millions of dollars, and attending an athletic event where the Sioux name is honored and explained before the event even begins, before the National Anthem even- is certainly not racist or the typical actions of a white supremacist in any way.. Loose the nickname loose a lot of money, keep the nick name, loose a lot of money. Good luck, but maybe look at it as pride for graduates, students, supporters and staff. Before everyone starts throwing out unnecessary terms, take a look and see how many people actually support the name, that haven’t been asked, and then see why they do. I bet its not for vengeance against others, or hatred of other races.
