Moore raises more faster, but Harsdorf has more cash
July 15, 2011 at 7:04 am in River Falls Journal
Campaign finance reports filed with Wisconsin’s Government Accountability Board show that recall candidate Shelly Moore has raised more money since April than incumbent Sheila Harsdorf, though only by about $13,000.

Does anyone know which university Moore received her master’s degree from, and what it was for? Her website is vague about this info. I was wondering if she pursued it to:1) become a better teacher, 2) pursue some other interest, ie politics, or 3) get the extra $10,000/year salary.
I’m guessing #3 since a friend who teaches (and refuses to get his masters) said that is the usual reason. Anyone have info to the contrary?

Years ago, teachers were required to obtain 6 graduate credits regularly in order to keep our licenses. Not sure what the current requirements are. Anyway, if you’re required to go to grad school like that, you’re eventually going to earn a master’s degree.

I just tried to decipher the WI DPI requirements for renewing a teacher license. The rules were changed in 2004, but anyone licensed prior to that, for the most part, is required to take 6 semester credits from “a regionally accredited four-year bachelor degree granting institution,” over the course of the 5-year license. No where does the DPI site state the courses have to be master’s level, nor does it state that if the teacher has a master’s s/he is exempt from the credit requirement.
My teacher friend has been teaching for 15 years….no masters. There may be an exception, but I’m guessing teachers get their master’s for the extra money, and they get it early in their careers….helps build retirement income.
from your post: “keep our licenses”…so you were/are a teacher?

Here’s something to think about before you vote on this election:
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody, anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work, because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

I love how Alice, danimal and others always have to bring out the big evil boogie-men, like the Koch brothers, when they really have nothing new to add to the conversation. Blah blah blah….Koch brothers……blah blah blah….big oil…..blah blah blah…. evil corporations.
How about this, how about BIG UNIONS….big, evil, greedy government unions soaking the taxpayer for all they are worth? Big evil special interests like the NEA and WEAC charging the taxpayer millions too much for health insurance (yes, right here in Hudson) because it helps them continue to fund their cause….their quest for more power and influence and control over your wallet.
How come you guys are OK with filthy rich George Soros dumping millions of dollars into all kinds of races and shadow organizations that support socialist and communist ideals, but you can’t stand any republican with money regardless of how hard they worked to earn it? It is the height of hypocrisy, but it is what we have become accustomed to from the left.

Shelly Moore is putting her campaign donations to good use, buying big-name Washington, DC consultants:
“Campaign finance records filed with the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board reveal that Shelly Moore, Nancy Nusbaum, and Fred Clark have paid a combined $155,928.21 to The Strategy Group and The Mellman Group, consulting and strategy firms that specialize in direct mail and polling.”
Read the article for the list of clients….these are the big guns Shelly’s hired….a lot of union dollars going to shove the drama queen down our throats.

I’d like to say I’m surprised that SM would send Wisconsin dollars to DC to get her elected–but it looks like most of her money came from out of state. Regardless, those of you locals who donated to her probably feel pretty good about bailing out the DC economy.
Ask yourself why she didn’t hire local talent to put together her glossy mailers. Is it because she thinks her supporters in Senate District 10 are too stupid to bamboozle the remainder of the voters?
Or maybe it’s just some good advice she received in Chicago from national politicos…you know, when she skipped out on the Hudson parade to raise out-of-state cash. Is this the political definition of ‘quid pro quo’?
This is not a good precedent. If she’s elected, expect SD 10 money to flow into Madison…and Wisconsin $$ to flow to DC.

You’ve assumed that I’m one of the people sitting in the stands, cheering for their favorite team–politically speaking. You’d be better off thinking of me as one of the people who isn’t even in the stadium. When it comes to government, my opinion is: Less is more.
I don’t care if your team is promoting farm subsidies, or if they are promoting public servants collectively bargaining against the taxpayer. I want less of both.
Having said that, I’ll be happy to review any documentation you care to post (or link to) to substantiate the claims you made above. Please share.

Good to see new blood here (less than 6 hours old)!
Here’s my prediction: In the next month, we’ll start seeing a bunch of new members showing up posting against ‘FitzWalkerHarsdorf’ (although I’m still not exactly sure what the fetish is with that name). Further prediction: Postings by these new members will be short, devoid of local flavor, and will appear to originate from the same talking (attacking?) points.
If my prejudice is incorrect, I’ll be happy to be proven wrong. But if the posts are uninspired, acerbic, and contain the apparently mandatory references to ‘FitzWalkerHarsdorf’…then I’ll assume that MooreWeinerSpitzer is getting more than $$$ from out of town.

Is it appropriate for a state senator to represent a union rather her or his constituents? I am concerned that a special issue candidate, primarily representing state workers, can not represent the best interests of Wisconsin residents! Perhaps special interest officials should recuse(??) themselves on issues directly involving their pay and benefits. I would never vote for a single issure candidate like Moore!

It is appropriate for a state senator to represent her constituents that voted for her. Which is exactly what Sheila’s doing. If the people who DIDN’T vote her don’t like it they should wait for the round of elections to try and change it. Not waste taxpayer money and demand a do over. Legal or not, doesn’t make it right.

Teachers and their union make education too expensive with poor quality results. Why does your union fear testing in schools? I hear teachers complain often about “teaching to the test” when they should simply “teach the class.” The assumption that tests do not measure student achievement and future performance is contrary to the fact that colleges, graduate schools and professional schools use them for admission. Why? Partially as an IQ test and partially in judgement of the students previous education. Why does the teacher union cry about student testing? Simple, when you have two teachers in a school teaching third graders, one with high performing students and one with marginal performing students, you have an objective method of measuring teacher performance. Ideally, you fire the non performing teacher! Right? Wrong when your union is involved! Your union is a big obstacle to improving education quality in our schools! Simply put the Superman movie funded by the Gates foundation has shown the public that your union is a big obstacle to quality, cost effective education!

When you test 20 students in a classroom you get a bell curve showing a distribution of scores, some good test takers some not so good. It is the median score that represents how well that schoolroom or teacher is doing. This could be used to eliminate underperforming teachers or get them the additional training they require. Your union seniority system undermines retaining the best teachers. Given the economic difficulties we are facing, we will need to make education decisions based on what is best for our students, not teachers. We need to have objectives and if a teacher cannot meet those objectives the school district should have the power to replace with an effective teacher.
I remember reading about a minor change in prescription drug coverage dropping Viagra and the stink the union made over this issue. The Milwaukee School District(?) could have retained 20+ teachers with this concession. Although not a Wisconsin resident, I believe Governor Walker needed to lessen the power of your union, hence changes to collective bargaining were necessary. Difficult times require tough choices. Your tax the rich strategy is ineffective because many believe we already spend too much on education. I am confident you are a conscientious, quality teacher!

So now we can’t do merit pay for teachers because it is too difficult to determine what sort of job they are doing and we can’t evaluate the students either. Pretty slick system this public education system is. It is far too comples for anyone to understand, let alone evaluate.

First, please let me repeat I am not a teacher or a member of any teacher’s union.
A bell curve may be useful in drawing some general conclusions about class progress as a whole.
I do not want teachers to teach a class. I want a teacher teaching the students in a class. I want a teacher who makes progress with all students not with enough students to meet an arbitrary curve. I know you want there to be an easy way to evaluate a group of students. Something that can be scored and explained in two sentences but this is not as useful as you may think. What if it’s your child that is holding back the class and needs additional attention? Do you really want the teacher to deem your child as a statistical “outlier” and as such be left behind because the teacher must reach a classwide arbitrary goal. It’s understandable that we want children to progress in a measurable way but I want a teacher who makes progress with all students and not just enough to move the curve. This is, by the way harder than teaching to “the test”.

I would love to have a sincere conversation with you about education, as I feel you care about education as we do! I do not dislike teachers because my grand mother taught in the one room school house that I attended in Minnesota. An outside bathroom! Wow, no excuses for my bad grammer, spelling errors, or coloquialisms, but I received a first class education because I was taught to think for myself. I believe that is our failure in education today. My children are well educated and much smarter than I am in disciplines such as, peace studies and law, medicine, psychiatric services, and we are never as vitriolic as these community web sites. We should be friends!

I agree, JohnB and I berlieve you are a thoughtful person trying to make a change for the better in your community. I believe that about many of the people who post here.
My wife and I used to run a business and every summer we would take on interns from the local schools. We would talk to these young people about their goals for the future and I remember one girl who told me she wanted to be an FBI agent…but people from here don’t get to do those kinds of things. I gently repeated the advice I had received from my parents and grandparents: You can do anything you want if you’re willing to pay the price and do what’s required. I told her to go to college any way she could and see what happens. She’s a Junior at UW now with a B+ average and continues to fight for A’s because she knows that’s what she’ll need for a shot at the FBI. We are so lucky to be Americans. When you think of all the people in the world the odds of being born American are very steep. We have been given so much and the people who teach our children deserve our support on every level. We need to invest more (not less) in our future. We owe it to those who came before and to those who come next.
