Man plans to stay put and finish cleaning up his Gardner property despite ‘eyesore,’ neglect complaints
July 12, 2011 at 7:00 pm in INFORUM
FARGO It’s been almost a decade, but the owner of what some have called “an eyesore” along Interstate 29 north of here isn’t giving up on turning the dilapidated property into his dream.

The guy is barely making it with his bride to be, sure would be nice to see someone give him a helping hand! Make a small block home with a block fence so no one gets annoyed and he can get married and go back to work, seems like this guy is really getting picked on for being down right poor.

He is a surgical technician, so he has the income to make good choices. Now, he has quit and will be using his pension to live on. Having said all that, Mr. Goehring has apparently gone about things backwards: If you can’t “afford” something, you save up the money and THEN make the purchase AFTER you can afford the item/property and still have funds to for maintenance and upgrades. If he is “poor”, it’s not because he is “hard on his luck” or “being picked on”. The only thing “poor” about him is the choices that he has made.

Charges are preposterous. We help people in floods not charge them with livestock at large because we don’t like how their house looks.

This guy seems like he has good intentions but why the heck would you quit your job as a surgical tech. if you are having money problems?? That doesn’t make any sense too me

Why the heck would you live right along the interstate in those conditions? That doesn’t make any sense to me either. But its all his choice. Personally, I think he has a screw loose, but it takes all kinds to make the world spin.

The land is a small triangle shape piece that was orphaned from a larger field when the interstate was put in. Since it wasn’t farmable anymore, the owner forfeited it to the county.
This guy bought it by paying the back taxes, which was real cheap on a per acre basis (or so I have been told). But the land still has no road access. Also heard he requested the state allow him access off the interstate, but interstate laws don’t allow that (they are called limited access roads for a reason).
I think this started with him finding some cheap land and not thinking through enough all the issues that he would have with that property. There was a reason no one else had bought it.

Why would you quit your job to fight that charge. They will probably just fine you and stay all the jail days. I would be worried if I were in surgery and he popped in the room, he is making some poor choices.

seriously, people PAY for books showing pictures of old barns falling over……many thinks its quaint or even cool.
if you dont like it, buy him out with your own cash. it is nobodies business what he does on his own property. especially in the middle of nowhere.

Doc: Apples to oranges here. There wasn’t any “historic” structure to begin with here. No 100 year old barn that is leaning, no nice old oak trees. He bought land and immediately trashed it. In 2006, in said that he “hopes to expand”. That’s 5 years ago. “Hope” is not a strategy. For that matter, quitting your job is not a strategy either. Plus, I bet that the fiance’ must be digging his financial stability.

It is not anyone’s business but his. You don’t like the way it looks? Too dang bad. He is not expanding fast enough for you? Too dang bad. As long as he is not taking hand outs from the taxpayer, leave him alone.

While I agree that the property looks very unkempt and the property isn’t coming along in a timely manner. It may have been putting the cart before the horse, quite literally this time. Having the property done prior to getting the livestock would have made more fiscal sense. Keeping livestock can be costly.
That said it seems that the animals are well maintained. So one got out, that happens, why charge someone unless it is a common occurrence?

First of all my guess is that these horses have been loose more than once for this guy to actually have been charged. So next time when someone dies because of an improper fence and loose livestock what will you all say then?

My favorite part is the sheriff’s reason as to why they didn’t single him out. No one else got a citation for loose animals. Singled out seems to be precisely what happened. Is this cop for real?

@ Jamie Smith
According to records, It was the North Dakota Highway Patrol who issued the citation.
I can not find record of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office giving out a citation for anything to Dean, however it appears they often get sent up there to check on the place.

Interesting article… I’ve always wondered who had that set up. Looks like someone skipped wood shop class in high school!
He really isn’t set up for a stallion. We have one and they require stronger fencing than a mare or gelding.
The area he picked, must not have any zoning laws for horse per acre ratio. For good horse keeping, the general rule of thumb is 1 1/2 acre for the first horse and one acre per horse thereafter. Not only does he have no business having an unattended stallion out there, he is overgrazing the spot he has.
If someone hits any of his horses on the highway, he is liable for any damages. He must know that! Hitting a 1000 lb horse at 70-75 mph will most likely cause death to anyone in the car or truck. I would be worried about that ticking time bomb if I were him. I’d also beef up my fences with all my free time!

I just want to say that everyone has the right to there own opinion. Even with this article no one knows the entire situation, just bits and pieces so how does that give any of you the right to judge? That piece of property has come a long way,if you don’t like what you see don’t bother looking. Mind your own business, stop calling in false reports because it is just harassment.

To be guilty of breaking the state law against livestock at large, he would need to WILLFULLY let them through neglecting the fence. The fact it happened due to flood damage, and the fact that he got right out there and fixed the fence as soon as he was aware of it pretty well means he’s not guilty of breaking the law. The fact someone complained means literally nothing as far as charging someone. It just enters into local politics.
The facts, if presented accurately in this article would mean that any charges are just a waste of tax money and likely harrassment.
The place looks a bit out of place, but the horses are in fine shape and are probably the most well scrutinized in the state. Nice to see something other than a billboard.

The guy is a nut-job. his ‘dreams’ as he calls them are more like hallucinations. A place for kids to ride horses? He gets the scrap wood from construction sites that throw it away- and he didnt have time to clean it up because of knee surgery? did he have the surgery 10 years ago? thats when the place became a junkyard and dumping ground. There has been more stuff that showed up this summer – dumped in a pile and will be in the same spot in another 10 years.

on a side note………. he says he quit his job to fight a misdemeanor charge that will not result in jail time and less than $500 on a conviction……anyone other than me see that as a little odd?
but then again….the place should be cleaned up by the end of the summer if he isnt working……bets on that one?

Good grief people, don’t you have something else to complain about? It is his property. It’s out in the country. I see many yards in the FM area that leave a lot to be desired. Anyone complaining about them? Horses do get out. We almost ran into one on Highway 81 some years ago. Did we file a complaint? No, we contacted the owner to let him know.

it may be ‘out in the country’ but it is definitely not out of site- its 100 feet from the southbound interstate where thousands of people see it…..which also leads to the livestock problem….im pretty sure 99.99% of the people that drive by have no idea who the owner of that eyesore
is to contact him when the animals are out.
