For 2015, Dickinson officials are projecting a population increase of nearly 50 percent compared to the most recent figures released from the U.S. Census Bureau.

I seriously think these population numbers are being a little hyped and skewed by our local officials. I am curious where the “building permits” reflect new housing units having been built or on the board to accomodate another 9,000 new people? Dickinson has been busy the past couple years “rebuilding” what was destroyed by the tornado, but we have not seen numbers even exceed a couple thousand new housing units over the past couple years total. The true population impact would be reflected in JobServiceND of Labor Force numbers. Today we have an estimated labor force of 16,789 for May of 2011 …2 years ago in Mayb 2009, we had just under 15,000. So a growth of around 1,700 workers…you compare that to Williston who had 14,900 workers and today sits at 21,452 workers…my guess is Williston will hit 25,000 before Dickinson does. I hope Dickinson grows, but I don’t believe we are impacted by the oil boom as much as we wish it was. When I see the “building permits” for housing units surpass towns like WIlliston (they have been hitting nearly 1,000 units a year for the past 2 years …and a developer called Granite Peak just broke ground on another 2,500 unit development called Harvest Hills) So when we see housing developments like this come into Dickinson, then I will believe we will hit hit 25,000 someday.

also…I don’t think they should include people staying in all the new hotels being built. I think the population should be based on new “housing permits” to indicate population growth, not how many people are staying in new hotels being built in Dickinson…the majority of these people have no intention of staying in Dickinson.
