The word “sheroes” doesn’t seem very dignified for this.

I agree, Buzz. I don’t like using a made up word for a permanent, serious memorial. I guess you and I should have volunteered to be on the task force.

It’s unfortunately a word, but I can’t find any clear meaning that would result in it being used on the memorial. If it is meant to enshire hero in the feminine sense, then heroine would be better.

The only place I found this word is in the “urban dictionary” ( you know, the place where parents go to look up words so they can figure out what the heck their kids are talking about) It’s not a word. I don’t care if Ernest Hemingway coined this phrase, it’s not appropriate for a Veterans Memorial. “Sheroe” belongs in pop or hip hop tune and how this writer for the Bulletin thinks it conveys a “Strong Message” is beyond me!

I did a Google search, too, and found the same Urban Dictionary definition so I go back to my earlier point that sheroe is a made up word.
I don’t know how the Bulletin does it but at larger newspapers the headline is not written by the reporter/columnist. The words “strong message” are only in the headline so I wouldn’t necessarily assume those are the writers words. The mayor is quoted – “It’s simple,†Bailey said. “And it sends a message.â€
I agree with your second point that if the term is OK with the women veterans, who am I to argue. I think it’s weird but whatever.

I should also add that if this term is OK with our women veterans, then what I think is irrelevant.
