Delta bag fees for soldiers returning from Afghanistan ignites backlash
June 8, 2011 at 11:54 am in Grand Forks Herald
Delta Air Lines hastily changed its baggage fees for troops today after a YouTube video showed soldiers complaining that they had to pay $200 apiece to check extra bags as they made their way home from Afghanistan. Continue Reading

This article wasn’t about any political party at all. How do you manage to work your hatred of republicans into all your comments Jeff H? I would assume the Delta employees were simply following company policy. It sounds like now that Delta has been made aware of the problem they will make an exception for military members. Good for them.

Good Lord Sandy! I have no idea how you came to this conclusion. I mentioned nothing about Obama or any other political figure. Only you and Jeff H seem to be able to make something political out of this whole situation. Tucker is exactly right that Delta airlines is a business that has to make a profit to continue operating.

think of it this way most military bags are overweight (50 lbs) anything under 50lbs is considered 30lbs for weight and balance purposes they already got 3 so they are counted as two bags so they get 180lbs of luggage. Everyone else gets no luggage weight for free. Now picture this you are flying out of Grand Forks on the CRJ 200 the max bin weight is 3500 pounds. so now you have 25 military guys flying out and 25 other passengers say they each have 3 bags that is 4500 pounds of cargo. 1000 pounds more then the max bin weight we haven’t even loaded your bags and we have already needed to pull off most of the bags.

The artical wasn’t about flying out of Forks…..It’s about coming home from the war front…..I think that’s a much different situation. If there is a charge it shouldn’t be based the same as general public rates for the same weight. Someone says the troops get reinbursed…Good if true, but still should be less than general public rates….

Not exactly from the war front, but en-route from the war front is what I meant to say…

Fuel to fly airplanes costs the same whether hauling cilivian weight or military weight. Why should a private company subsidise the military? Shouldn’t the Department of Defense have had a plan in place for this?

Because airlines get subsidies from the government.

What party was in favor of putting the fat cat republican defense contractors bloated salaries over the needs of troop logistics? It’s real easy to sit back and say it’s the DoD’s fault and then vote for the republicans who support those policies.

With all due respect to our men and women at arms, whoever put the video up should be severely reprimanded and given a lesson in business economics. Did they expect Delta to just eat the cost of the extra fuel it takes to haul extra cargo? Businesses are not charities, they run on profit. The employees at Delta need to eat too. The situation should have been privately resolved by the DOD. Now Delta has an undeserved public relations mess on its hands and will lose even more money over the deal.

The soldiers were reimbursed, just like millions of Americans who have to pay these fees if their job requires it. Get over it.

What a great bunch of comments. Clearly, most people think it’s okay for business, even BIG business to break even or even make a profit. Can I ask everyone, including Calamity Jane to ignore Jeff H for one month, starting today!. He’s not a Democrat….he’s left of any Democrat I know. Many Democrats are willing to agree that is’s okay to charge people, even people in uniform, a fair price for services provided. Do not respond to Jeff H..for one month, plzzzzzzzzz!!!!
