As an avid outdoorsman and big game hunter myself, I can easily agree dogs should not chase deer. I would not shoot a dog chasing a deer.. I might shoot the deer if it was a nice buck
…. I might agree I’d be very annoyed if I watched a dog chasing a deer.. but this dog doesn’t seem like the type of dog to be chasing deer in May. Sad deal

There is no excuse for the type of brutish behavior exhibited in shooting these pets.

This was a totally heartless, gutless and cowardly act committed by someone who does not like Bagley Law Enforcement. Perhaps the first place to look would be the person or persons that Cooper helped apprehend during his service as a K-9 dog. If the guilty party is found, the question would be the appropriate punishment. I am sure that there is nothing on the books that would be appropriate.

Unfortunately, we learned the hard way after moving up “north” from the metro: people here have NO problems shooting dogs they just happen to see. Until you can get laws on the books that really punish these people, this will continue to happen. Our dog got loose from a fenced in yard one day when the furnace repairman went out back to check the intake pipe, and didn’t shut the gate behind him. Too late, our lab was out and gone on an adventure. One that ended just two hours later with a sonic boom of a rifle shot by our ever so nice?? neighbor. We had lived there…..two weeks. Some not-so-nice people live around here.

Whoa there……You make it soud like this is just what we do up here. We see some critter on the loose and we slap leather to drop them before they get any farther. Your situation is bad, but unless you live next to either someone with livestock or perhaps young children they were concerned about I’d say this was an exception and not the rule….At least in towns like Forks I think you’d find most people would call animal control rather than shoot a stray. My point is that to put out a blanket statement that most people up north have no problem shooting strays is more than innacurate….

They really need to find the heartless SOB that did this with every assest available and lock them up for a long time. I say this not just because it was a cops dogs either. As far as I’m concerned it could have been anyones and I would feel the same way. I agree that very tough laws need to be put in place to deal with this CRIME!

I highly doubt this dog mauled anyone, look at the breed it was a hound and lab mix, not known to be an attack dog, most law enforcement service dogs are highly trained and will only attack if force is warranted. You might want to inform your self before you spout off.

From the “Last Frontier” of Alaska, my comments are that neither “Copper nor Sally” did anything to deserve such a horrific death~the comment that a ‘police officer was shot’ is right on the mark~Copper’s life was no less of valve~did he make an ‘enemy’ while on duty and was sought out for revenge~for a person to do this to two beautiful animals, there must be a real hurt upon their heart and soul; and a great emptiness in their life~for they’ve never loved an animal; an animal that only knows and gives ‘unconditional love, devotion, happiness’ and so much more… I’ve had many pets in my life and there’s not one that hasn’t left a ‘major’ hole in my heart when they’ve crossed over that ‘bridge’ to forever green grasses and peace~ Mr. Peterson, I pray that ‘peace’, which passes all understanding will find it’s way to you, somewhere down the ‘healing’ road~and remember that “Copper and Sally” are now your forever ‘angels’, to guard and watch over you the rest of your days… God bless

What a low life POS. I know if it were my dog, and if I ever found the POS that did it, I’d be the one sitting in jail and the POS would be in the hospital.

One question….Isn’t killing a police dog considered a major felony in most states? One that comes with a lot of time? Then again I wonder if they catch the person responsible if they could prove he even knew it was a police dog?

Sorry , for your loss of Copper and Sally,Officer Larry Peterson and family. he was not just an outstanding officer but , a friend to all the kids at schools in the county.I am a dog owner myself and anybody that would take a life of an officer and a childs pet away from them, with no regard of the heartbreak they have caused needs the full extent of the law thrown at them.most dogs like mine has a microchip tracking device in them, mine traces while hunting the speed , distance, heartrate of my dog, and how far he has traveled. how fast he is going, and i can follow him on GPS so, if he stops or his heartrate stops i can pinpoint the exact location he is . i can find him nomatter if he is dead or not. the tracking device never stop’s working. so, who ever did this criminal act remember tracking devices are out there.and you will be found and the people of Clearwater county will make sure of it.God Bless and watch over all the officers of Clearwater Sherriffs office and police officers, and thankyou for the outstanding job you all do, K-9 included.
