Council turns down singles club’s liquor license request
May 3, 2011 at 1:50 am in The Jamestown Sun
The Jamestown City Council denied a beer and wine permit Monday for a proposed new business in Jamestown.
Shari (Doepke) Besednik had applied for the license to offer alcohol with fine dining meals and during social events sponsored by the singles club she operates. The business is planned for the strip mall at 2619 Eighth Ave. S.W. in Jamestown.

I truly hope the City Council reconsiders Ms. Besednik’s request for a license. This would be a legitimate business, one that is new to the city. Kudos to Ms. Besednik for bringing a new business to our city, a city that is in need of new businesses to grow. I am appalled that the City Council disapproved her request on baseless grounds. I did not think that our City Council members were so narrow-minded…we DO need change in this town, and if our Council wants to continue on a path of resisting change and growth, then we have a lot to be concerned about. If we want growth, if we want young people to live here and stay here, then we need to make changes. Changing or creating a new ordinance may be time-consuming, but we certainly cannot live in the past and then complain that our community members go other places to conduct their business and spend their money. Jamestown needs new and unique businesses, and this type of business is common in larger cities. I think it would be wonderful for Jamestown to have a safe, social setting for singles to meet other singles. As the customers are adults, I do not see the issue with serving alcoholic beverages; it truly is part of the business model. We cannot be scared of change. Let’s be open to creating a new ordinance so that other new businesses consider Jamestown as well.
Hot debate. What do you think?

Wonder if this will go as good as the business she had up in the Emter Theater.
A lot of businesses pre-paid for ads inside the restaurant, it failed, and they were out their $$.

I am quite displeased with the decision to deny the club’s liquor license request. This town can become lonely and I grow tired of spending weekends drinking beer alone in my basement.

Why can’t she hold these events in the places she used to.
There are plenty of facilities with liqour licenses where this type of event could be held.

I usually bowl on Fridays, but any other time I would enjoy company. Our Council never has the young bachelors of the town in mind…

Is it really something our city council should be spending time on?
I think they have their hands plenty full with flooding, sewers, water lines, roads, and other more pressing issues.

So you are saying that the city council is too incompetent to handle more than 5 issues at once? The same people that you probably voted for? I’d like to think they are more than capable of handling multiple issues at the same time.

Stop being so dramatic. I’m sure our Council will save us from the flood once again. In the mean time whats so wrong opening a place for the singles to mingle?

Seriously, people. If you must have alcohol involved to mingle with other singles, there are PLENTY of bars in our city to accommodate this. Jamestown does not need another establishment that provides alcohol.
