A LOT OF WATER: Flooded Devils Lake acquiring 3 million gallons a minute
April 15, 2011 at 4:42 pm in Grand Forks Herald
More water is flowing into Devils Lake from the upper basin this spring than any time since the record Flood of 1997. A total volume of 7,332 cubic feet per second was recorded Friday. Continue Reading

Ok, I am very tired, but I just did some quick math. Right now, at this very moment, there is 55,000 gallons of water headed toward Devils Lake every second. That equates to 3.3 Million gallons every minute. Once the proposed outlet is put in place, when both outlets are running at full capacity they will allow 4,500 gallons of water to exit Devils Lake every second. Like I said, I am very tired so my math could be wrong, and someone please correct me if it is, but it seems to me that a bigger and better solution is going to be needed VERY soon.

The 600cfs output needs to be 6000cfs to have any real chance of making a difference. All 600cfs does is slow the overflow by a few years. It is a waste of money. We have to face the truth the only(and cheapest) solution it the natural outlet in the Tolna Coule’. Build a dam to hold at 1458 and clear out the coule sediment. The lest the water out in a controled release dropping the lake after the spring floods so it can hold the spring floods back the next year. Other wise Vally City and the other down stream communities are going to get it as has happened is past history all at once.

But armoring the coulee at 1458 holds the water back at that level – and that level is devastating to the DL and surrounding communities.
The only solution is to get more water off NOW. Or YESTERDAY. How many more homes must be moved, how many more farms must be lost, and how many more LIVES must be lost before this state finally understands the gravity of this situation?
