NCAA FROZEN FOUR SEMIFINAL: Michigan defeats UND in 2-0 heartbreaker
April 7, 2011 at 4:44 pm in Grand Forks Herald
UND’s drive toward an eighth NCAA national championship was derailed by Michigan tonight, as the Wolverines rode a trapping defense and goalie Shawn Hunwick to a 2-0 upset win in the Frozen Four at St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center. Continue Reading

Hunwick was a brick wall.

David Roscoe Hackstol is the Marty Schottenheimer of college hockey. Talented teams, successful regular sesons, but a lifetime of playoff chokes.
One and done again Dave, you are 1 – 6 in the Frozen Four and one and out in the last five. Your regular preparation isn’t working, you may need to step up to the challenge if you ever get back to the Frozen Four again and make some Red Berenson-like adjustments to your game plan. Getting there just isn’t enough anymore.
As a fan this is excrutiating, I can’t imagine what the players feel like.

It may be excruciating for you and you sound that you would rather be like the Minn gophers. I don’t care one wit whether we won it this year. You are a buffon if you think that you can somehow win a national title if you aren’t in the tournament. We are always in the hunt for the title. Would you rather we only get one chance every 10-15 years???

Hakstol gets outcoached once again in the Frozen Four. A trend has developed.

And whom would you hire who could possibly do a better job?
Seeing as you are so profound in your criticism be equal in your expert choice for a replacement.

“Hakstol gets outcoached again” Are you serious? The reason the Sioux lost was because of some bad bounces and a hot goalie. If you think it was the coach’s fault, you definitely don’t understand hockey. Your team outplayed and outskated them most of the game. BTW, I am not a Sioux fan and usually cheer against them, however I enjoy watching your team. They play hard and with grit and are fun to watch. You should be proud of them, they had a great year! Go Bulldogs!

Whenever the Sioux lose in the Frozen Four, many fans use the “hot goalie” and “bad bounces” excuse. Every time. It’s time for some accountability. Just look at his record in the Frozen Four. He’s a very good regular season coach but doesn’t seem to know how to translate that into the Frozen Four.

No, I was in Denver, and we definitely got outplayed there. And the year before in St. Louis. But this year that is exactly what it was. There are dozens of situations in that game where if the puck had bounced differently, it could have been a drastically different game. But, unfortunately for the Sioux, that isn’t what happened. Congrats to Michigan for a hard earned win against us, and congrats to Duluth for their first National Championship. They definitely earned it.

Since all of the fans that traveled to the Twin Cities have nothing to do now for the next 2 days, they might as well pound the pavement on 94 West and go sandbag in Fargo.

Buffalo B I can’t speak to the other Frozen Four’s you reference, but blaming the coach for last night’s loss is ludicrous. If the team would have come out flat and didn’t compete, I could see the coach getting some of the blame, but that wasn’t the case. The Wolverine’s were clearly outplayed. Hockey is a funny game, bad bounces and a hot goalie can easily steal a game, which happened last night. At least Hakstol gets his teams to the Frozen Four which is much better than our Coach Lucia here in Gopherland has done lately. He can’t even get them in the Final 5. Interested in a trade?

Hakstol’s fault? Ridiculous. Michigan wouldn’t even be in St.Paul unless they’re goalie hadn’t stood on his head in the West Regional last weekend. Red Berenson has been coaching Michigan for 27 years and has only won 2 NCAA championships. He hasn’t won the big show for 13 years. Hakstol is one of the 2 most organized coaches there are, the other being his mentor Dean Blais. Between the 2 of them they have made the ND the most successful NCAA program in the last 15 years or so.

Lucia won two back to back 10 years ago and hasn’t done anything since. So if you are the type of fan that wants to bail on your coach and program we will trade you even up tommorrow. On second thought we will even give you $1 mil and Lucia. Want to trade you bunch of ingrates????

Prior to 2000 there were not nearly the number of quality of players for Div I hockey programs that there is today. There are hockey players from all over the US. Prior to 2000 the US ametuer programs and Olympic teams could count on not making medal rounds in world competitions. Now the compete for medals at all levels and occasionally win one. That is why it is so hard to win a NCAA Frozen Four. As for the reat of your rant is is nothign but political ranting that has no credibility or foundation for a commentary on a sports comment section. RELOCATE yourself and your opinions to the Editorial page and leave the sports commentary section to us sports fans. OMG, you are truely a self ordained mouth piece spewing your narrow view of life.

Great season Fighting Sioux. Playing nearly 40 games, winning all but 9; making the big show. Every year 16 teams enter the tournament and only 4 make the finals and every year only one team wins the whole thing; that means 15 teams don’t win. Would we like to win? Of course we would. The hockey program was an embarrassment under Rube; don’t get me wrong, the players did their best and there were some great ones but our hockey program started with Gino and has never looked back. I don’t know this for sure but I would guess that we are the #1 or #2 team in the nation for wins in the past 30 years. Add in 5 national championships and several appearances in the post season; I’ll take that any day. Thanks coaches and players nothing but class. Win or lose I couldn’t be prouder that I am a Fighting Sioux.

I’m proud of our team and the season they had. They fought throught injuries and came to play for every game. They gave it thier best against Michigan and they came up a little short. I know they are hurting as are alot of fans. I feel worse for them than I do myself.
In the end I love our team, our coaches and all of the individual players. I’m proud of the way they play and the values that they have. They’re fine young men and I’m glad they are on our side. They should be proud of thier season and the way they stuck together as a team. I’ll miss everyone of them that leaves and hope they come back to visit us when they can. I look forward to seeing those that return play another year. Many of them will make us proud as they go on to other hockey achievments. They will make us proud of the great hockey tradition that goes along with being a Sioux. I’m glad to be part of it since 1962 and look forward to many more great hockey thrills.
