BBE still feeling pain in aftermath

After Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa had impressive wins in its first two boys basketball state tournament games, the Jaguars looked like an overwhelming favorite to beat Springfield in the championship on Saturday.

I don’t think it is too difficult to see what happened. B-B-E played every phase of the game nearly flawlessly – for heaven’s sake, they only had 4 second half turnovers. Four second half turnovers when at times they were in a frantic state of mind trying to get back into the game.
A third game in three days, and 2-of-11 at the free throw line. It’s all in the legs. The Jaguars didn’t have it, they had spent quite a bit of energy beating up Goodhue and MACCRAY. Both their first two opponents were excellent ball clubs, and the Jaguars beat them both by double digits.
With their worst shooting performance of the season, they still only lost 70-58. Keep in mind, the 12-point spread was mostly due to the “foul game” that they were forced to play in the final four minutes. Springfield made their free throws.
As a Jaguar fan, I can’t expect that these kids would be superhuman. They played an incredible state tournament – they should have no regrets with the runner-up trophy.

I forgot to add – great story. Ones like this are never easy to write.

I agree with your first comment. But the story isn’t going to help them feel any better. These are emotional teenagers who didn’t experience a loose all year. It’s hard to get over – but reminding these guys of the PAIN in big bold letters on the front page of the sport section – poor taste was my first reaction.

You do have a point. They are resilient guys in my opinion. I saw a couple of them driving through Belgrade on their way to baseball practice – they smiled and waved, appearing to have a little happiness on their mind.
Coach Montbriand said, it’ll be a 2-4 week ordeal to really get over it. He’s right. Interestingly, he had no time off – as he is the head baseball coach and that started right away this week. Opener will hopefully be in a couple weeks!

Nora, I agree with you completely. The sports editor, Scott Thoma, didn’t have to use such a ridiculous choice of words. It was almost mean-spirited. Does he even care about the people who read this paper? It sure doesn’t look like it. He’s always had a self-inflated view of how much his opinion matters.

Randy, come on, great story? You’ve defended the sports editor before—how close are you guys anyway?

Great stories don’t always have to make one feel good. That’s not what journalism is about. Betty – Scott and I aren’t very close, I will say that.
