Floodwaters expected to spill over Newport levee
March 22, 2011 at 8:16 am in South Washington County Bulletin
With the Mississippi River set to rise rapidly this week, Newport officials are warning that floodwaters appear very likely to spill over an 800-foot-long levee that protects a low-lying neighborhood on the city’s west side. Continue Reading

Hopefully the forecast below freezing lows for the coming week will help minimize the flooding.

It was nice to see Rep. Kriesel touring Newport, talking to the folks who stand to lose everything and learning first-hand what needs to be done in order to avoid this catastrophe…oops, my bad! he wasn’t there…I guess he was too busy doing the radio thing and chatting with the Karl Rove…never mind

Kriesel hasn’t let these people down, the City of Newport did when in 2004 they decided to no longer allow sandbagging of the levee because of safety concerns. in basic terms that means Newport does not want the liability in case of injury and or loss of life. Justifiably so. Neither the federal, state, county or city governments want to do anything about maintaining or reconstructing the privately built levee. The situation has been exacerbated by the audacity that we think we can drain wetlands and then try to recreate a wetland somewhere else in the name of flood control. That usually means that somewhere downstream is going to flood worse because they mitigated it somewhere upstream. It’s just not nice to fool with Mother Nature.

I AGREE with 99 % of you porst…very well said! The hubris and ignorance of past generations regardimg wateshed management has left us with an unpleasant legacy. However, regardless of the causes for the almost-certain debacle in Newport, Kreiesel has been AWOL on this issue: Congresswoman McCollum was there, even though this issue of the levy is not really a federal one; however, the state legislator who represents these families in St. Paul was apparently too busy to listen to these folks personally…

Well, there’s a whole boatload of politicians that could’ve been there that didn’t show up and good for Betty for showing up, but that doesn’t necessarily make Kriesel the bad guy now does it? It’s also too bad about this neighborhood, because it’s beautiful. Right out of Better Homes & Gardens. I’d personally like to know more of the story about the levee, who built it, how did they build it, etc. etc.. Maybe Judy Spooner could write one, she’s good on these historical articles. After a few more floods it could all be gone.

Again, agree with alsmot all your post, but you still fail to understand that Kriesel is the ONLY state representative for this very district. There are no “boatload of politicians that should be there” there is only ONE state representative of the majortiy party for Newport (the only one who would be listened to by the GOP-controlled legislature) , his name is Kreisel; he ran for office supposedly to help his constituents on exactly these kinds of issues. He should be there NOW, there isn’t any more pressing issue in his whole district right now. What is he doing if not having a first-hand look at the problem, getting all the information he needs in order to make sure that proper actions/resources are taken by the State? Again, why is he not doing his job?

Buzz B, so how much is the GOP paying you to be obtuse? You do not get to change MY ORIGINAL comment: which was that Kriesel was AWOL as far as meeting with the folks in Newport…my ONLY issue was that he hasn’t, and that he has not first-hand knowledge about the levee issue, and that as the elected representative from that district he has a responsibility to meet with these folks, just like Congresswoman Mc Collum did…do YOU know if Kriesel has met with the homeowners? “Yes” or “no” will do for an asnwer…

I’m not here to debate with you the merits of one party against another. You politicize everything in this forum and there is no arguing with you because you beat one drum. From everything I’ve read on Kriesel so far, it seems he’s a moderate, which is good for all of us in the long run. So if you want to bash the GOP all the time, go ahead. I’m just glad that the cooler temps of recent have brought down the flood threat level for these folks in Newport.

This is not about parties, it is about having an incompetent (and Tea Party ideologue) nitwit like Kriesel doing NOTHING while the people of his district face ruin….simple as that

whetever floats your boat not the most sensitive thing to say on a comment thread dealing with our neighbors in Newport losing their homes to a flood…did you hear that one from Krisel’s sports radio show? (you know, the one he does instead of talking to the people of Newport?)

Good Lord man, get some help. There is nothing anyone can do about the levee-the city decided that in 2004. Kriesel is in support of the buyout of the affected properties along with Sieben. You are a very angry person and this is the last reply you’ll receive from me. Spend some time with your fossil collection and mellow out.

Buzz B states that There is nothing anyone could do about the levee…BUT then McCollum was there listening to the people of the city AND you yourself said above that a boatload of politicians should have been there too…I know that consistency & logical train of thoughts are anathema to Tea Baggers, but you take the price from speaking from both sides of yoput mouth..typical Tea Bagger-speak
