Stillwater bridge project gaining bipartisan support
March 18, 2011 at 12:26 pm in Hudson Star-Observer
Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton and U.S. Rep. Michelle Bachmann of Minnesota toured the Stillwater lift bridge on Friday. The Democratic governor and Republican congresswoman agreed that Congress should pass a law allowing construction of a new bridge. Continue Reading

I believe that both Minnesota’s and Wisconsin’s economies would have a great deal to gain from the building of a new bridge. Downtown Stillwater would also improve and Hudson would not be inundated with commuter traffic when the liftbridge closes as it inevitably does nearly every spring with flooding and at other times with bridge repairs.
Let’s open the budget wide if you want to see true waste! I think you’d be surprised to see the millions upon millions that we spend on researching the mating habits of armadillos and migration patterns of mosquitoes, not to mention the millions, probably billions that are wasted on Medicaid, Medicare and welfare fraud and abuse. Let’s clean up some of these massive budget items then see if there isn’t money available for the bridge.

its not stillwaters traffic problem- its all of ours….and the current spot is CRAP for a location for the amount of cars that need to travel on it. Now the POS will be underwater for who knows how long.

the bridge would have been replaced years ago if the environmentalists hadn’t gotten in the way.

The environmentalists wanted the old bridge removed and a new one rebuilt in that location. That would have been done 20 years ago, but the big spenders wanted to spend more money on the colossal project. Blame them for the delay.

20 years ago- that spot *might* have been good enough…now way today. downtown SW can NOT handle that traffic.
HOw much extra fuel/time is it costing truck to detour all the way around? Same for backed up traffic?

Stlllwater has been handling the traffic for the last 20 years even with a lift bridge. Funny how some rant about spending money unless it’s for something they think they need. Building the new super bridge will increase urban sprawl moving people even farther from where they work. That will use more fuel. Had they built the bridge in downtown Stillwater 20 years ago it would be a non issue right now and would have saved us 700 million dollars.
