For communities in Cass and Clay counties, the difference between celebration and disappointment in the 2010 census results seemed to relate to a single factor: location. Continue Reading

I think I would dislike that drive everyday to get to work, even if it was only 15 minutes. Those that do it…how does that time affect your daily routine?

You drive 10-15 minutes even if you live in town, unless you’re lucky enough to live near where you work. I know almost no people who do. My 25 minute door to door commute is time to listen to the news or music, either get my mind set for the work I have to do or wind down and shed some of the stress of the work day. I encounter about 5 stop signs and no stop lights on that trip, meaning I’m actually driving all that time and not stopping every 2 minutes.
And in 2009, I could go from working on the flood fight and being around people trying to save their homes to being in a place where I didn’t have to worry about saving my basement 24 hrs a day for weeks on end.
The main drawbacks are that I’m 1/2 hr away from my kids, I must have a vehicle in good shape for the trip, and some days this winter driving was very stressful. However, with a little planning and patience, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

And presumably the cost of your commuting gas / maintenance is offset by a less expensive home? Or could be at least.

I wonder why some communities were not included, yet others, further out in the county, were??

Highway miles v city miles. I have a program to track this, and it is amazing how much my mileage fluctuates on the weeks when I’m running around town for meetings v the weeks I only drive between home and the office. I’d be putting in a tank of gas every week no matter where I lived. Living out of town is maybe a little easier on my vehicle overall.
But again, I can’t drive a $1k beater and risk getting stuck between here and there, and I’m putting on 13k miles a year just to get to and from work not including all the extra driving for gas & groceries and impulse shopping.
In any case, I lived in the city for twelve years of my adult life, and now I’ve lived in the ‘burbs for four. I wouldn’t say one is dramatically better than the other. They both have their charms.
