A pot o’ gold: Runnin’ O’ the Green is good for business in Jamestown

St. Patrick’s Day looms in the near future, and in Jamestown that means one thing The Runnin’ O’ the Green.
This charity pub crawl on March 19 gives thousands of dollars to worthy causes and at the same time fills up hotels, restaurants, bars and many other businesses in Jamestown
Last year more than 1,800 registered runners helped raise $400 each for 15 local cancer patients and $12,000 for Elks Camp Grassick.
“I know the bars do extremely well,” said Larry Knoblich, event founder. “But the peripheral businesses also do extremely well.”
Buffalo City Tourism estimates the total economic impact is at least $500,000 for Jamestown.

The bars in Jamestown need to respect that this organized event is for CHARITY and that they need to pay their dues. Some do, but not all, and the runners of the event have the right to know. BAR OWNERS: Post a big sign on the door(s) of your establishment with nothing but a large percentage on it – this is the number that will tell runners how much of your daily profits to the charity. Then, follow up by reporting the amount you gave. RUNNERS: If you don’t see a sign, don’t go in.

It perhaps would not require a sign with a percentage but I agree with MWensman it is totally wrong for these bars to be taking advantage of charity – everybody else is paying to participate so perhaps the bars should each be required to pay several thousand dollars to be on the list of bars in the event – that could double or triple the amount of money that this event raises for charity.

I agree with you, Rodney. It should cost money to be on the official list of establishments participating. Each place should be required to give back. What’s wrong with my sign idea, though? I think your idea is good, but only in conjunction with my idea. If I were you, I’d be careful how you pick your words.

I’m just sick and tired for hearing about people taking money away from the businesses that EARNED that money! I worked hard for every dime I ever earned. EARNED! Kids don’t understand you gotta work for your money! Why should charities get the money from these businesses! The only thing charities should be handing out is advice cards that say “GET A JOB!”
Crimeny. This country is on a course for doom.

Speaking of those who want handouts, Obama said he’s be willing to give Japan anything they think they’ll need. Where was our help when New Orleans was in need!
