Ice Fishing Challenge moves to Lake Agnes Saturday

More than 3,000 people will gather on the ice of Lake Agnes in Alexandria Saturday, February 12, as the 11th annual ice fishing challenge gets under way. Continue Reading

3,000 people at $35 each equals around $100,000 and ZERO fish??? Next year just have it in a parking lot somewhere??? (LOL) Sounds like time to go back to a real lake??? I would suspect that the nearby liquor store was also a winner?? Too bad for the organizers and participants.

LOL Okay, I’m not a fisherman by all means, but I do enjoy fishing, and if someone had asked me, I would have told them to stay away from Lake Agnes cause there’s like no fish in that lake, just a bunch of carp!! DUH!!!! It makes you wonder the real reasons behind fooling so many people into paying money to fish there doesn’t it???
Land of 10,000 lakes and they picked Lake Agnes, its a filthy swamp. They used to dump their toxic wastes into it, and they picked THAT lake as the grounds for the second largest Ice fishing contest in the state of MN??? Sorry folks, to all of you that purchased a ticket to fish there, they got you GOOD!!! Maybe next time you should research the lake before you WASTE your money!!!

Lake Agnes is a good fishing lake. It is known for its bass and panfish. The newspaper has printed photos of fish being caught on the lake. As reported in our past stories about the tournament, the site was changed for several reasons. Organizers were hoping it would boost participation. They thought it would be good for the downtown area and provide more convenient access to take anglers on and off the ice.

The event was changed to Agnes for one reason and one reason only and that was to put some money into the city’s budget. It is hard to believe no fish were caught, but it really isnt that great a lake. I have been here 30 years and drive by the lake every day and you only ever see 2 boats out there so a couple pictures here and there dont make it out to be that good a lake. What was so wrong with where it was being held? Oh ya, a few businesses werent making money and the city liquor store wasnt making any either. Ten years in the same spot couldnt have been all that bad. The reasons given sound good, but there was only one reason.

Also, why would you choose a lake where you cant weigh a bass in the 12-20 inch range? I thought it was an ice fishing tournament? That pretty much eliminates that species right there. bad decisions.

I just listened to the guys on SportsTalk (AM1500 – also carried by KXRA) have a big laugh over this. I would assume it will make national news as well. What an embarassment for the area!

IMO, It’s going to take a few years and some creative marketing ploys to get the out of town folks back. I know if I spent $35 bucks and 2 nights lodging and meals and no one caught a fish, I’d be a bit upset. I know in the previous location, not all people caught fish, but there was some action. I also think the all cash deal is a downer too.
