Duluth City Council considers new rental restrictions in zone near colleges
February 6, 2011 at 6:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
The Duluth City Council will take up a proposal to put new limitations on rental properties in the UMD neighborhood that would create a “protection zone.” Continue Reading&

Housing issue aside….the DNT picked a doozie to high light in this article. It’s pretty hard to feel bad about some dude who can afford to support TWO houses on a mere 50% to 60% of his ‘paltry’ income when many with one home are losing their residence to foreclosure. It makes me want to take two aspirin and still have no sympathy in the morning…..
Hot debate. What do you think?

Here we go again, can’t the council come to a one time decision and stick with it on this? This doesn’t seem to be a topic and meeting after meeting in the Minneapolis City Council—maybe its time they take a model from some other city and quit reinventing the wheel.
As for the above comment of “This poor guy can’t afford two houses”, well he has done what he needs to do to get where he wants to be in life, have you done anything with your life other than whine?

Lighten up and take a chill pill….all I’m saying is Some are Losing their Homes because they can’t afford them and can’t sell them. This med student isn’t really Struggling like Some Here are……

At the time the medical student bought his house he probably anticipated using it as income property and maybe turning it for a big profit down the road. It is too bad it didn’t work out, but I’m a 25 year resident of the Kenwood/UMD neighborhood and very tired of seeing this lovely area turned into a commercial housing zone. I too had plans when I moved here, planned to raise a famliy but now find the only other residents with children live a half mile away, young familys have been displaced by greedy, oportunistic, non-resident landlords! Have my property taxes been reduced commensurate with the decline in neighborhood desirablility? Nope, while yards have been turned into blighted parking lots and trash piles high along the curbs, pot-holes grow bigger and taxes rise every year.

Funny kind of free country, when people can’t even rent their house out.

What? There’s a problem with rental housing in Duluth? When did this happen?

>”“I can’t get rid of it or even rent it out to cover my mortgage expenses,—
Sorry for your troubles, but thats what you get for buying a house in Duluth, Mn. As Duluth dies, the need for housing will drastically diminish.
No jobs
People dont want to move there
Cant sell your house
Retail business will leave because of ever decreasing customers
which leaves you …
(Wanna guess?)
No jobs
People dont want to move there
(and it continues) …
Its so simple and you can actually see it happening as we speak. Its really too bad you Liberals did this to your town.

Is anyone else getting tired of this continually making the DNT headlines or the city’s continuing inability to deal it?

Just like the school board, the city council can’t make up their mind. Time to bring in some outsider who will direct the city council, and then slink away. Where IS K. D. these days?

The student rental issue has been debated in Duluth since at least 1986, and that’s only as far back as I remember. My guess is that it’s been around much longer than that. It’s comical but not unexpected from a city that took 25 years in deciding to close a high school.

Obamanation…you have a completely poor grip on the reality of Duluth, surprising since you seem to spend all of your time sitting on the News Tribune site…maybe that’s your problem.
Why can’t Glawe sell his home? Because he bought a house right next to an expanding university Campus. In 2006, it was pretty clear than any house near campus would not be easy to sell later on…pretty dumb move to buy a house that you can’t rent out and won’t sell.
Has nothing to do the economic ‘realities’ you claim for Duluth.

>”Has nothing to do the economic ‘realities’ you claim for Duluth.”
It has EVERYTHING to do with Duluth’s economics. Even youre idiot Mayor Ne$$ figured things out a couple weeks ago when he called for more jobs. It appears you’re just a little slow on the draw.
I’d also ask,” What gives you the right to dictate how I spend my time, you little Nazi?” Why do you Liberals feel you have right to control what others do?

Bauer, you made the case for him…Why would anyone buy a house in Duluth that they will not be able to resell or rent it out and WHY wont they be able to sell it or rent it out…You show your ignorance by blaming the home-owner. What exactly is the dumb move? The city restricting home sales and rental in a significantly depressed housing market, or buying a house near the university you spend countless hours at while working your butt off in medical school.
It is laughable that you blame and ridicule someone that attempted to boost the local economy by attending medical school here and purchasing a home in our community.

Well put CA. Your statment about the city restricting home sales hits home. The DFL city council has hurt many home owners trying to sell their homes with restrictive polices that hurt market sales and also have contributed to the decline in home values.

“I’d look a lot of other places before I’d ever consider taking a job in Duluth now,’ he said.”
Agreed.
I live on Brainerd Ave. while helping support a 2nd year Med Student through UMD… and WE WILL LEAVE DULUTH WHEN SHE IS DONE WITH SCHOOL. She will find employment outside the city and we will take our not insignificant income away with us. I will no longer support this Duluth with my tax money. If Duluth wonders why young professionals are leaving, just ask me… This town is dead to us.

If I owned property that I wanted to rent out but could not I would join with other property owners who were like minded and sue the city for loss of income and legal expenses in a class action suit. Every city is duty bound to do a little social engineering, but this infringes on the rights of everyone who owns a home in that area to do something reasonable and that is allowed elsewhere. A vocal ,heavy handed group of whiners is going to tell me I cant rent my place out because they might not like the new nieghbors???? I hope they join forces and sue the city

as usual the council has it bass ackwards. Instead of restricting rentals inside this area, RESTRICT THEM OUTSIDE THIS AREA! This area is a college area destined to be rental. The family’s moved out years ago. That type of neighborhood has run its course there. But, we’ll just continue to kill the tax base with devalued homes that cant be converted to rental. The city could be making money hand over fist by allowing rentals in this area of town. Instead we’re letting Opey,Andy and the other “well intentioned” people run the city into the ground.
