Pat makes some good observations. I agree with Mr. Broin on that. The important thing to realize is that any fees the county might charge for use of its right-of-ways would be passed onto customers. Any inordinate fees charged to users of county right-of-ways could reduce the profitability of those “utilities” and other service providers. The county and other government bodies regularly subsidize business with tax free zones and other support, so why Commissioner Bergman is suddenly concerned about this topic is directly due to his support of the current broadband project and its now suspect management capabilities. Particularly, the financial challenges and the county’s responsibility to properly account for prudent expenditure of a lot of taxpayer money, borrowed and grants. No one, including me and I am sure Mr. Broin, is against a wisely thought-out and cost effective broadband expansion to county residents. I think there is enough evidence now on the county’s plate to suggest they best be careful of how all this comes together. Those who have expressed dislike of his and Pat’s comments here best inform themselves of what factors are involved in this project, and how all of those factors impact the project’s chances for financial success.
