“Afro-American?” That phrase went out years ago. The current politically-correct term for black people is “African-American.” Please edit your column before it hits the street in print editions and offends anyone.
A lot of high school students also read “Catcher in the Rye.” We teach our kids not to say “g***amned.” Let’s white-wash that book, too. Holden Caufield can say “gosh-darned” in future editions, now that Sallinger has joined Mark Twain in the great beyond. We can do that after we put undergarments on any paintings of nudes we don’t want our children to see on a field trip to the art museum.
What incredible arrogance it must take to edit Mark Twain: almost as incredible as the facile argument for endorsing it. If you’re really worried about what our children see and hear, take a sample of all the vulgarity on network television every night. Let’s edit that and leave classic American literature untouched–please.
