Budget battle feared over District 833 reserves

South Washington County Schools officials say they are worried that state lawmakers will penalize District 833 for being financially prudent as they look to balance the state budget. Continue Reading

Okay, let me get this straight..as from the story. Katie tells us there are no plans yet to take away money from the District but then goes on to advise them to hurry and spend it so it isn’t taken away. I really wonder how she manages her checkbook at home! Hurry and spend that paycheck before someone comes to take it away?
This is another clear sign of how Dems played their part in building the economic mess we are in. May we one day have a fiscal conservative senator to prove this in a district that has not experienced anything other than tax and spend.

Once again the political goggles are fuzzy. Board member Gelbmann, and representatives Lillie and McNamara (all Republicans) agreed with Katie’s assertion that they should spend down some of the reserves.

Obviously not fiscal conservatives, because they prove by agreeing they are capable of being just as irresponsible with the people’s money. Anyone ever going to fix the obviously broken system, Chris? I don’t see any attempt to reward being good financial stewards. Just the constant government “spend it before you lose it” mentality that drives us deeper into debt. And the “spend it or we won’t get that same amount next time”. An amount that was obviously more than they needed or the surplus of the citizen’s money would not be there to be wasted “so they don’t lose it”.

Sen. Sieben’s suggestions are right on target, and those who criticize her really do not understand how budgeting works nor what the Republicans are proposing. The school district already budgeted these amounts last cycle, but not the republicans want to take this money away (after it was approved, received and allocated for specific needs). It is not surplus, it is allocated as a reserve in case of an unexpected reduction in resources or unexpected expenses. However, if the Republicans want to take this money away in order to help balance the budget (money, again, that was already allocated & approved in the past) then the schools should use it for the many unmet needs that our children have. M Let the Legislature come up with other ways to solve the budget mess instead of going after our schools and our children.
