I am wondering who gets the bill for this? I hope not the taxpayers.

“The Iron County Sheriff’s Department has not received charges yet for the rescue from the Ashland Fire Department. If charges are received, they will be forwarded to the Iron County Board to see if Wick and Popko will be charged for the rescue, according to a Sheriff’s Department spokesman.”
12″ of ice on a small quiet lake is one thing, but Lake Superior? That’s just asking for trouble.

One would think that after fishing Lake Superior for 60 years, one would be able to see the signs of trouble long before they come about. Or they saw the potential trouble and decided to go out anyways. More likely they knew damn well the lake was not safe at any given time, let alone with big fat hairy ice chunks bobbing all around in 8 foot waves. Reckless. Very reckless.

Just say, “Thank goodness they are ok,” and let it go. I was ticked off even before opening the comments because I knew the self-rightous vultures would be circling. You did not disapoint. And now…I’m just going to let it go…

I’d say those two had guardian angels watching over them.

At 80 years, that Skip Whick is a pretty active guy. What a harrowing story he’s got to tell. And with such a long life, I’ll bet he’s got at least a dozen other good ones as well.
I’m so happy to hear both these guys made it safely back to shore. Fantastic!
I don’t see any reason why they should be charged for the rescue. I’m just guessing, but perhaps the majority of people requiring rescue were acting a little foolhardy, or at least, obviously, engaging in somewhat risky behavior. Both these fishing buddies seem to have taken reasonable precautions to protect themselves and those in their party.
We’d all wish to be so hale and hearty in our later years.
