ST. PAUL Two Republican legislators want to crack down on what they call welfare waste, but Democrats say their idea likely would cost more than it saves. Continue Reading

Limit welfare benefits to what is required for survival and make it uncomfortable so the time spent on it is short. why are we shutting down frivolous purchases with welfare money now when we should have never let it start in the first place? Smoking, drinking, lotto tickets are not necesary to survival. It is a no brainer to not require the taxpayer to buy them. Next on the list is the cell phone and cable tv. The public money is paying for this for certain people, while those of us who are paying for it are cutting minutes/services packages and taking only basic cable. welfare recipients have the latest and the greatest phones and full movie channels with little or no incomes?????? I turn my thermostat down to save on the heat bill. Unfortunately I have been in many houses where they are on fuel assistance and the window is open in the winter or the residents are wearing shorts and t-shirts inside. Limit welfare to requirements for survival and make it uncomfortable to limit the time spent on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with beans, but believe there is another much bigger issue. Welfare of any and all types to non-citizens needs to be eliminated now. That includes the children of non-citizens also. We all know that the children are not really getting the welfare the parents are! Unless you consider driving the kids around in a new SUV necessary for the kids well being! These people are laughing all the way to the bank and all to often the bank is in a foreign country. I can’t believe that people are considering cuts to Medicare and social security while giving away money to citizens of other countries, Wonder how many hundreds of millions if not billions that would save us. This is another catastrophe of wrongful immigration. We have to wake up! Please!

I agree 100%. We know a single parent who just this weekend bragged to us about the trip she is planning to Las Vegas as soon as she gets “the check” from the government that is apparently arriving in her mail box this month. The reason we know about this is because she asked us to babysit her two children while she is gone. It took a lot of nerve for her to ask us this because she knows we both work full time jobs that pay the taxes that afford her the footloose and fancy free life style she enjoys. Enough is enough! The welfare system needs to be overhauled with tight scrutiny and personal accountability. Why are we allowing freeloaders to use it as their personal piggy bank? Because that is what’s going on. That money is not being used for the children and everybody knows it.
