I am not condoning this person’s actions. However as time goes on and the US government keeps on defying what the American people want from government and doing back door deals and getting more corrupt, these types of things are going to happen more frequently which is unfortunate. This should serve as a wake up call to all elected officials – get this country back on track the right way because the majority of Americans agree that you are not on the right track.
My prayers go out to all the victim’s families and may God be with them during this tragedy.

Right wing and Republican web sites all over the nation have been scrubbed or taken down.
Sarah Palin had this on her web site until shortly after the the shooting, when the site was taken down. Cross hairs? Really? Cross hairs, to mark the Democrats the wanted taken down?
This is what the constant bombardment of hate does. Rush, Palin, Beck, Fox News propaganda..
Naturally the shooter was classified as mentally deranged. Aren’t they all? Well, their followers have to be mentally deranged also for going along with their and agreeing with their mindless hate.

It seems your boy from Daily Kos also wrote on their blog that this particular Congresswoman be in the cross hairs because she sold out the constitution. Here is the article you should read before you politicize this tragedy – http://www.politicsdaily.com/2011/01/08/sarah-palin-blamed-by-bloggers-for-shooting-of-gabrielle-gifford/
Here is the quote from the story – Like it or not, the sort of rhetoric and imagery employed by Palin’s PAC is not terribly unusual. Politicians constantly talk about “targeting” voters — does anyone think they want to shoot them? Political consultants tell politicians to “hunt where the ducks are, ” but they certainly don’t mean to shoot voters. Ironically, Moulitsas has also previously urged his readers to “target” Giffords and put a “bulls eye” on her district because she “sold out the Constitution…”
And there is no hate on the left – thats right Olberman, Howard Dean, Rahm Emanuel (who once sent a dead fish to his opponent), Ed Schulz, Rachel Maddow and others have no hate do they????
And you have no way of knowing who this person a was a follower of? And based on your rhetoric you must also be mentally dearanged because you have bought into the MSNBC, Olberman, Schulz, Maddor hate.
BUT I GUESS THIS IS OK BECAUSE IT CAME FROM THE LIBERAL LEFT HATE AMERICA LOONEY LEFT CROWD!!!
Poorly-rated. Like or Dislike: 25 37
The difference is all in the context. Moulitsas was referring to voting her out of office while PalinPAC’s little shenanigans used unequivocal representations of violence (actual bulls eyes in addition to quotes like “don’t retreat, reload.”)
“And there is no hate on the left – thats right Olberman, Howard Dean, Rahm Emanuel (who once sent a dead fish to his opponent), Ed Schulz, Rachel Maddow and others have no hate do they????”
Wow, jump to completely irrational conclusions much? Straight from Rachel Madow:
“And based on your rhetoric you must also be mentally dearanged because you have bought into the MSNBC, Olberman, Schulz, Maddor hate. ”
I personally don’t have a TV. Are they channeling their thoughts into my head with evil “socialist”-created thought-rays now?

Sorry but the Daily Kos also used the words bullseye so you can continue to spin it your way and liberals always have to make excuses when they own words are used against them. The Daily Kos was no better than Sarah Palin if we are placing blame, however the liberals can’t/won’t admit it because in the world we live in nowdays the liberals are the only voices that are rational and are worthy (according to their looney thinking).
Sorry don’t follow Rachel Maddow or anyone’s tweets.
Hot debate. What do you think? 13 22
“Thee Daily Kos was no better than Sarah Palin if we are placing blame, however the liberals can’t/won’t admit it…”
Sorry but there’s a HUGE difference. The right uses terms like “take them out” and “reload” and “do everything possible” and so on and so on. The right refuses to accept that they have a fringe amongst them that is catalyzed but such vitriol. The very fact that the likes of Sarah Palin are scrubbing their site of evidence is evidence in and of itself that they know what they do is wrong. If they stood behind their own actions, why have anything to hide?

To connect Palin’s unfortunate metaphor to this cheats the victims. I don’t condone violent rhetoric, but it exists in all areas of our life and there is a *huge* difference between metaphor and actual violence. The current political atmosphere is too charged and that may have lead to this violence, but to blame the right or the left only contributes to the problem.

Yep, I knew I’d see a post like this when I saw this article. Unfortunately, his politics are pretty dubious at best. The guy was nuts, possibly schizophrenic, but of course Fgores, and others of his ilk are frothing at the mouth to paint this guy with their political paint brush. It happens every time something like this happens.
“But Loughner’s mental state is unlikely to comfort his victims, one of whom was a 9 year old girl. Neither should his political affiliation be a factor. Caitie Parker who claims to know Loughner says on her Twitter page.
caitieparker Saying Jared Laughner was the gunman. Really hoping that’s not the same guy I went to HS with, really good friend. Freaking out right now!!!
caitieparker @antderosa it’s loughner just checked my year book.
caitieparker @antderosa I went to high school, college, & was in a band with the gunman. This tragedy has just turned to horrific.
caitieparker @lakarune I haven’t seen him since ’07. Then, he was left wing.
caitieparker @antderosa he had a lot of friends until he got alcohol poisoning in ’06, & dropped out of school. Mainly loner very philosophical.
caitieparker @antderosa he was a pot head & into rock like Hendrix,The Doors, Anti-Flag. I haven’t seen him in person since ’07 in a sign language class
caitieparker @antderosa As I knew him he was left wing, quite liberal. & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy.”

Per tweets from the shooter’s former classmates he is “As I knew him, he was left wing, quite liberal & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy.” (whatever that means.) Another tweet regarding the murderer “He was a political radical & met giffords once before in ’07, asked her a question and he told me she was “stupid & unintelligent.”

Someone also made a fake facebook account with his name, liked President Obama’s page and a few others, added a quote about being liberal, and then spread the link to it all over Fox New’s facebook page.
Despite the fact that conservatives are desperately trying to spin this one around, what we know so far points to him being a conservative. Doesn’t trust the government? Likes guns? Believes in conspiracies? Sounds like a right-wing conservative to me.
Either way, this was a horrible incident.

If you want to place the only responsibility on the killer, and not on anyone who influenced him and encouraged his extremism, then you have to apply that principle consistently and say that the only people responsible for jihadi terrorism are the jihadis themselves. Not the people who inspired them, or radicalized them, or gave them the toxic ideas that led them to kill innocent civilians, or a violent reading of religion, or some trying to build a mosque, or anything else, but just their own completely autonomous decisions.
If I had to guess, you don’t apply this principle consistently.

Jamie, you are correct.
At the moment, there’s so much unfolding that it’s unrealistic to assign any amount of accountability to anyone other than the shooter himself.
Thanks for offering the opportunity to clarify.

It is very sad in this country where Republicans now murder those with whom they disagree. America likes to think of itself as an advanced country and castigates other countries where this occurs. While conservatives wrap themselves in the flag over this event and try to blame persons whom they call liberal as being responsible, the rest of the world sees this political attempt for what it really is. What the republicans want is anarchy. They don’t want democracy. There is no room in their world for dissent, only their warped sense that their positions represent everyone. One only need look at the results of elections to find that there are very many people who disagree. They take small victories and declare winning a war when this country is not at war with itself. As long as the extreme right takes this position, there will be more murders. Students of history can make many comparisons between the Nazi and Republican parties. First it was the murder of pro-choice people, then other dissenters, and now members of congress. Americans should be very sad, not rejoicing. For those who rejoice, they are not real Americans. They are infidels.

Who said he was a Republican?? What proof do you have of that? Why do liberals lie so much and think its acceptable? It must be because lying liberals have no conscience.
Liberals and the hate America looney left forget the nutjobs on their side or they find their actions acceptable. So for liberals its acceptable for a member of the looney left to murdher is what I’m getting because they never condemn the hate spewing from that side of the aisle.
I feel like Marty has it right. The only people to blame are those involved in the shooting.

To intelligent thinking people the terms like “crosshairs” or “target” means to concentrate on a subject to modify it, keep it the same, or to learn from something. Unfortunately there are many low intelligence people who can’t think beyond a two or three word phrase. Those who are in power, regardless of party affiliation, need to be careful how things are worded or more of this going to happen. It isn’t political, just pandering to the morons among us.

Left wing alright, I wonder who is brainwashed ! http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/03/palin-uses-crosshairs-to-identify-dems-who-voted-for-health-care-reform.php
“I can’t trust the current government because of fabrications,” Loughner wrote in a YouTube slide presentation. “The government is implying mind control and brainwash on the people by controlling grammar.”
There are bizarre references to creating a new currency. He talks about gold, but there is no clear reference to why a new currency was needed or what he thought its impact might be. On both the MySpace and YouTube web pages, Loughner mentions his concern over literacy rates and the fact that few people speak English. http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2011-01-08-jared-loughner_N.htm
it’s unfortunate Loughner wasn’t taken out at the scene. hopefully they leave plenty of rope in his jail cell.

Let’s just say the political atmosphere in our country has run amok. Tea Parties, by history, were not civilized communication…..Republicans and Democrats alike have created a “the sky is falling, the sky is falling’ and blaming each other. Crosshairs and “let’s reload” are inciteful to violence, but Palin is not alone in trying to getting the nation riled…we are indundated every day by the Beck, Schultz, Limbaugh, Hennen, and every other loud mouth than can get in front of of a mike or TV camera telling us how one party or the other is ruining our lives, and urging everyone to “take action”. Unfortunately, not everyone listening is of a stable mindset….we can only imagine how people who are already on the edge of sanity interpret the constant bombardment of political accusations. This is incitement, people. If there is anything that needs to be taken back in this country, it is rationality and respect. What has freedom of speech gotten us — the Cartoon Network on multiple channels! Take this as a call to have rationale and respectful dialogue with your elected officials, and hopefully America will have a chance. The other option – we can turn into the countries who use guns to get rid of whoever they don’t agree with – there are several articles in Saturday’s Forum that will tell you how that works out. Please pray for these victims and for those who were forced to witness this horrific event, and pray for our Nation while you are at it.

I agree that the country has run amok. We are going the way of Rome. We’re going to fall if we don’t correct our path. Rampant debauchery, lack of morals, values and standards, the most vile of us controlling others’ freedom of speech. The likes of that strange little man, Rachel Maddow and the rabid, criminally-insane (IMHO) Keith Olbermann whipping liberals into a froth….Yikes.
I disagree itmatters. Because someone who is insane might be listening, we need to shut down political talkers? That’s garbage, and you and others like you just like to use events like this, which are isolated, unrelated, and tragic incidents, to stifle free speech. It is what the Supreme Court would call a chilling effect.
“Any call to cool “inflammatory” speech is a call to police all speech, and I can’t think of anybody in government, politics, business, or the press that I would trust with that power. As Jonathan Rauch wrote brilliantly in Harper’s in 1995, “The vocabulary of hate is potentially as rich as your dictionary, and all you do by banning language used by cretins is to let them decide what the rest of us may say.” Rauch added, “Trap the racists and anti-Semites, and you lay a trap for me too. Hunt for them with eradication in your mind, and you have brought dissent itself within your sights.”
Our spirited political discourse, complete with name-calling, vilification—and, yes, violent imagery—is a good thing. Better that angry people unload their fury in public than let it fester and turn septic in private. The wicked direction the American debate often takes is not a sign of danger but of freedom. And I’ll punch out the lights of anybody who tries to take it away from me.”
Wow, way to go slate!

It turns out that the shooter, jared lee loughner (we don’t know about his accomplice, if he had one) is a deranged lunatic; a self-described terrorist whose views, if you can call them views, are far more associated with the left than the right. One of his favorite books is the Communist Manifesto. He is anti-religion. He is anti-military. He apparently is against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Glen Beck, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Sharon Angle etc. gets all the publicity they want to tell everybody to go out and kill Democrats.
But if somebody listens to them and DOES it, we should all shut up about it so that Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin Rush Limbaugh and Sharon Angle, etc. get a free ride!
Yeah, sure, yabetcha, an anti-government type shooting a gathering of Democrats is not political because he was a pot smoker, making him a left wing loonie.

Shows how ignorant of the left you are Scott, did you see his entire reading list of favorites? Pretty wide range there, hardly pointing to any particular philosophy. The picture of him being used in the press mostly was cropped out of a larger picture where he is volunteering for a reading program, hardly appears to reveal anything violent. Hard to say he was “anti military” either, just mad at the army for not accepting him. I sure hope some kook doesn’t slip through the system and “string him up”, we need him alive if we really hope for answers. itmatters said it best in an earlier post, I completely agree.

So this normal person goes to Sarah Palin’s web site, sees the add and decides at that moment, the Congresswoman needs to be shot? I can see how this happened now. Thanks 2 cents.
I think he was driven more by the movie ‘The Jerk’ – where a crazy person randomly picks out Nathan Johnson randomly from a phone book. THIS GUY WAS CRAZY, HIS ONLY POLITICAL AFFILIATION IS WITH THE POLITICAL PARTY OF ‘LOONIE’. Stop trying to paint this guy as some sort of right winger – if you look at his trail, you will see more left leaninging than right, much like the guy in DC that shot the security guard and the guy who flew the plane into the IRS building – not that you will hear this from the media.
I find it interesting that people are posting links to Jared Loughner facebook and youtube accounts. Considering that the FBI stated they took down the sites to preserve evidence within 15 minutes of identfying him. The FBI has also stated that a number of fake sites have popped up claiming to be his since the event.

The politics of the shooter, clearly and irrevocably is conservative, anti government and has been validated as such. The sheriff also made direct comments to the same. This man, how much was he driven to this act by the actions of people like Beck, Limbaugh, Palin (in your sights), Bachman, and many, many other conservatives who are most closely related to attack dogs. And Ms Bastett, you clearly make my point about the killing of pro choice people. They are not doing anything illegal but conservatives disagree with them and shoot them. Clearly you support the killing of people with whom you disagree. That is why this killing occurrs. It is the belief by conservatives that murdering innocent people is acceptable if they disagree with you. This is very sad and exposes the country for what it really is.

The guy was apparently a nut who liked reading Marx. But didn’t liberals make a movie about assassinating Bush? Didn’t they spend 8 years bashing him with utter hatred? Don’t they brand every conservative as a hater? So after fostering a climate of hatred they are surprised to see things like this happen?
How about liberals actually engage in civility before they lecture others on it. I remember when Reagan was shot and liberals cheered. Now they want to take this nut, who liked the Communist manifesto, and use him in their hate campaign. This will simply create more such incidents, but they don’t care.
I think eveyone should put aside politics and pray for the congress woman’s recovery. The gunman is an irrational nut and it doesn’t matter if he is left or right. No rational person condones what this maniac did.
