2010 out with a bang with double blizzards

Travel likely to remain hazardous all weekend
Ice and snow continued their wintery grip on the Red River Valley as a new year greeted eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota with a second blizzard in as many days. Continue Reading

I just hope people heeded the warnings and stayed off the road. Bad enough to put your own life in danger but then more people come and try to help you out, putting their own lives in danger also.
Happy New Year everyone!

Yes people should heed the warning and stay off the roads and this includes the media. There was absolutely no reason for they print/radio/TV crews to try to make it to the crash site on Thurs, it was irresponsible of them, we didn’t need to see the pictures and it just meant that the rescue crews had to worry about more people and their safety. Its hypocritical for KFGO to sit on the radio and preach to the general population about how bad the roads were and to stay home and then for their news person to come on the radio and say they are trying to get to the crash site. So why should they be allowed on the road and the rest of us should have to stay home. The FORUM, KVLY, FOX, and WDAY were no better, but KFGO holds themselves out to be the best and most responsible of all the media in the area, so I project them as the biggest problem in this area.
I for one thought it put more rescue crews in jeopardy cuz if one of them got stuck or stranded, that meant that rescue crews would have to go get them for their irresponsibility.
Shame on all the media in the area for not practicing what they preach on the radio to the rest of us. They seem to think they are far superior to the rest of the minions!!!

I agree! when media people are out driving around describing how difficult conditions are, my thoughts are “if you can do it, so can I”. However I have more sense !!

Yeah, yeah. And if the “media” wasn’t out there somebody would be criticizing them for not doing their jobs.

Sorry, I disagree with you and Japat. I expect certain people to take unusual risks for their jobs. Risks that most people most people avoid. News people go into bad weather to show us how bad it is. Cops, paramedics, and fire personnel go into these situations to save lives. By your logic about media, wars and hurricanes should be off limits too. How about Hurricane Katrine coverage? How about the Iraq? Maybe the government could just tell us what is going on. That’s a trustworthy source. Sorry, but I do want to know . I have no type of affiliation with any news organization by the way.

Good thoughts go out to Lowell Balk. He’s the kind of guy who would put the needs and safety of others ahead of his own, and was injured while trying to assist others.

Amazing! Kudos to all the rescue crews and everyone involved in making this potentially dire situation what could be called something of a success. There could have been deaths, and many more injuries out of this horrid storm, yet the people of the Valley once again shows resiliance and a coming together to get everyone through it safely. Living in Biz, I get so sick of hearing about the ‘imperial Cass’ mentality because I KNOW that it is so untrue. I am proud to call myself a Fargoan, and cannot wait to move back (weather and all). Let’s hope Mr. Balk has a speedy recovery as well.

how about not driving? KFGO just reported that a bunch of morons decided go to thompson and jump on the interstate and then got stuck by argusville….so the highway patrol had to go and rescue them and give them the whopping $50 fine. What a joke- the legislators in this state need to get some balls and do like south dakota and fine them for every minute spent , every mile driven- and send out an army to get them. A couple $2000-3000 bills will start to keep those morons off the road. nahhh- lets just make everyone else risk their lives to get them and fine them $50 and send them on their way. THAT will teach them. Personally i think the police are doing a disservice when they do that- they are upsetting the law of nature. If these people were in the wild they would die on their own. I say let nature take its coursel.

Last night I thought the news said that anybody caught on the freeways would get a $1000 fine plus any costs related to rescue and possibly jail time.

Were all of the peoplei that were getting stuck hiding under a rock when NO Travel Is Advised!! I had quite a commical night watch the nimrods across the street getting stuck. Driving too fast for the conditions! Did I go out and help? NO, I was snowed in my apartment. Even if I wasn’t snowed in, I wouldn’t have helped. Because I am NOT and Idiot~~

Fargo, West Fargo, Moorhead, etc. should also tie liquor licenses to requirements that businesses shut down when no travel is advised. If law enforcement, the DOTs, etc., recommend no travel and a business with a liquor license opens, they are fined or their license is suspended for a set period of time.
If all bars had been closed last night, there would have been a lot less traffic on the roads.
Fines could also apply to non-essential businesses that are open when no travel is advised.
