Just imagine how many scholarships could have been given with the 5 million. America continues to lose its economic edge in the world and we continue to invest in people who play with balls. Is it just me or am I the only one who believes that athletics are total waste of time and money on the collegiate level?

That has to be one of the most insanely idiotic posts I have ever read and we are all dumber for having read it. Scheels entire existence is based on sports and they already donate millions to other causes, including scholarships. Go live in your Amish paradise and churn your own butter.

Yes Michael, you are the only one who believes that…

Michael Hansen, schools shouldn’t have to rely on private donations to pay for scholarships. If you are concerned about funding, perhaps you could urge the state government to better fund its schools. It’s not like they are hurting for cash.

schools are for learning – not for playing games. One of the most expensive things schools have are sports programs and they only benefit a very few students. I agree with Michael Hansen.

State colleges are a business. If they don’t have students, they don’t have enough revenue and make money. Athletics is a huge part of driving new students. Do you realize NDSU has had record enrollment every year since jumping from D2 to D1? Do you realize that by making the NCAA baskeball tournament, they received close to 50 million dollars in free advertising. This isn’t a public school. It’s a competitive business. NDSU is one of the largest employers in that state and they help drive the economy. For one to be successful you need the other.

Jeff, the US is losing its competitive edge precisely because people like you have chosen to see college as a business, rather than a place for people to grow intellectually and vocationally. Maybe if you and others stopped viewing college as a business, we could do without excessive college advertising, unnecessary athletic programs, and huge private donations for athletics.
In turn, maybe Scheels and similar businesses would do the right thing and fund programs for the benefit of society rather than for the sake of their own self interest. I mean, really, wouldn’t the money go further if it was donated to students who had quality minds and could make a difference in the world? Do we really want to invest in monkeys (no racial pun intended) who dribble and catch balls, and inevitably inspire children to dribble and catch balls too? The last time I checked, dribbling and catching balls hasn’t been terribly important in solving the world’s problems and bringing us greater peace and prosperity. The most dribbling and catching balls has done is provided us with some distraction.

Can you imagine how many people could be fed if people didn’t indulge in tobacco use.

I agree with Micheal Hanson, And I also agree with Chas. Sports programs are a waste of money, And they DO ONLY BENEFIT a few students!! NDSU changing divisions didnt do shit to raise the ## of students going there, the increase in students is due to other factors such as the general trend of more and more people are choosing a 4year degree over a 2, economy…etc.
All I wanted to add was…..its Scheels money, they can throw it were ever they want. …was it spent in a stupid manner…..yes. Was Sanfords gift spent in a stupid manner ….yes.
Does NDSU throw money at a lot of stupid projects….YES!!

Here’s a novel idea. How about college students and/or their parents paying for their education considering college graduates will earn more in their lifetime than those who don’t attend college? As Jeff Healey said Scheels makes their money off sports gear so it’s entirely appropriate that they make a gift for a sports arena.

Don’t you think the money could have been much better spent sending it to the Federal Treasury? I’m sure most left wing nut jobs are thinking that right now. Didn’t that money rightfully belong to the government? Respond when laughter ceases.
