I’m troubled by a hospital/health care company donating millions to a sports complex. Hospitals should spend their/our money on health care, not on sports promotion. No wonder our health insurance premiums are going up with no end in sight. Sanford also gets tons of public money through Medicare, CHIP, and Medicaid, and yet they’re giving $10 million to a sports arena? That’s our money! This is why our health care system is not up to par with other countries.

I agree. It has become very clear to me that Sanford is a marketing-based company which is wasting our health care dollars left and right with self-promotions.
The Forum has nothing but good things to say about all these expenditures yet will use every opportunity they can to attack a certain local insurance company whose questionable expenditures are but a fraction of Sanford’s. They even used a man’s death to take more pot shots! The only reasonable conclusion I can draw is that The Forum is a corrupt and untrustworthy organization.

Its amazing how Scheels is trying to keep up with Sanford. They bought the name to the Urban Plains Hockey Arena cuz they feared Sanford would get it, now they give money to the BSA to keep up with Sanford. I’m afraid that if Scheels always tries to keep up with Sanford, their overpriced merchandise will only get more expensive. That plus Scheels playing the religion card all the time is the reason I don’t shop at Scheels.

There is a difference between Scheels and Sanford Health giving. Scheels is not and does not claim to be nonprofit. Sanford on the other hand is giving money (ten million dollars) that they should not even have if they are a nonprofit health care system. They should putting that money back into the system.

So money that was swindled from the poor (from the WORST credit card company in the US) to a health system to a sports arena. Glad to see Sanford Health’s focus. Where is that clear dome over the Sanford campus that was promised about 3 years ago? Or how about the cure of diabetes they claimed the could find? Oh wait that took a back seat to placing “billboards” (twins playoff game anyone..) at every location they can. Nice to see they keep their word and priorities straight…..such a great health system.

I have already commented on this issue under another article. I think it is sickening that athletic programs receive this kind of money. Not only is it sicking, it reminds of the movie “Idiocracy.” Everything is our culture takes on a nascar image; Advertising is EVERYWHERE. It just makes me want to puke. Our culture is continually being reduced to nothing more than consumption.

Like the emperors of Rome and the pharaohs of Egypt that built great temples and monuments to themselves, so well-to-do American philanthropists enjoy giving to community projects that build sports, recreational, medical, and other facilities. Their names are then prominently displayed and in some cases the projects are entitled in their honor. They have effectively fashioned a shrine for their own adulation. Locally, the names of Scheels, Newman, and, most recently, Sanford come to mind.
While it is not for us to judge their motives as only God looks upon the heart, these benefactors (especially those who identify themselves as Christian) may wish to consider what Christ had to say on the subject:
“So when you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:2-4)
Those who truly wish to give to the needy with no fanfare might consider those suffering from our invasion and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. Four million have have been displaced and one in six Iraqi children are orphans, many of these are living in the streets:

Also those who have been most supportive of these disasters we have created, conservative Christians, may wish to consider giving a portion of their tithe to help alleviate the misery we have we have brought them in the name of Christ. Instead of a church building project or a new parsonage for your pastor consider supporting an organization such as Collateral Repair Project (http://www.collateralrepairproject.org/).
The lives lost and suffering inflicted can never be fully compensated, but such giving will send a message that not all Christians and Americans are callous, mindless warmongers. While you may not receive praise from you community or church, you will be meeting real needs and honoring the Christ that declared: “In as much as you have done it to one of the least of these My brothers, you have done it to Me” (Matthew 25:40)
