Downtown Fargo does not have enough parking. Despite many attempts to do something with downtown who wants to put up with the hassles when the malls have what you want or need. Downtown Fargo is its own worst enemy.

Downtown Fargo is a cesspool in nature. Look at successful cultures and cities who boast their downtown areas. You need some open air and gathering space as well as green space. A market square open for street performances and the like are mandatory. Our infrastructure violates every visual cue there is for making someone feel welcome or wanting to hang around. Go to Spain, Italy, France or Germany and look how their cultures act and live. Every city has open areas where people can mingle and be entertained. If they have to commute a few blocks to get their they don’t mind because they want to be there. Our downtown provides an area to struggle to find parking then congestion the second you leave your vehicle. Give it a haircut and new skyline and you’ll still have crap. Change the ground level ambiance and provide an open area where people can go to visit, be entertained and explore and you’ll have a downtown worth walking two blocks to see. A new building will do nothing and it’s a complete joke to think it will.

Too much parking? That’s ridiculous! Why, just the other day I was going to spend the afternoon eating at the King House buffet and I had to park a BLOCK away! The battery on my Rascal nearly went dead. After I finished my 8th plate I drove my car to State Bank to deposit my paycheck, but couldn’t find a parking spot right in front of the door there either so I just went home. Wouldn’t you know it, my check to the King House bounced all because there’s NO PARKING in downtown!!11!

When I’m in Fargo downtown is always my first destination. I agree that more green spaces and outdoor entertainment areas would be nice. I am used to the big cities of Europe so I don’t mind walking a few blocks from my parking spot or riding the bus or taking a taxi.
