“There’s a cash prize, yes, but the experience of seeing a homeland is, for many contestants, a prize in itself.”
Give me a break. Norway is not your homeland. I always chuckle when I listen to North Dakotans and Minnesotans talk about their cultural identity. They usually say something stupid like, “I am 100% Norwegian.” In my mind I respond with the following:
“No, you are American, plain and simple. You were born in the United States. You have never been to Norway and you don’t know how to speak language (saying ufda doesn’t count). Just because you celebrate Norwegian holidays, sometimes eat Norwegian food, shop at the Norwegian store in the mall, and crack Ole and Lena jokes doesn’t entitle you to call yourself Norwegian. Ask any REAL Norwegian and they would agree with me.”
Yes, I have actual Norwegian friends who have visited and lived in the region. They also laugh every time they hear “I am 100% Norwegian.”

Well we’re Americans, of course. But it is still possible to have 100% Norwegian ancestry. (as I do)
