   What Part About His Win DON’T you understand?
   Mark Dayton has surged to a lead in the DFL primary polls on the strength of his last name and a simple message: “Tax the rich!”

   It’s easy to see why this message resonates with DFL primary voters but will it stand up under the harsh lights of the general election? And is Dayton really the right messenger for that message? I think not.

   As the general election nears, independent voters will learn that that, while Mark Dayton is wealthy because he won the lottery of birth, he has never earned significant income and he’s never had to worry about whether he’d have enough to pay his bills, so of course he doesn’t mind raising income taxes.

   They will learn that “millionaire taxes” have failed in every state they have been tried, and they only succeed in making low-tax states like Florida and Texas look more desirable to those highly productive people that we want to live and work in Minnesota.

   So please DFL, nominate Mark Dayton and run on the message of “Tax the Rich,” but realize that when Dayton talks about the taxing the rich, he’s really talking about taxing hardworking small business owners, not the heirs of department store fortunes.

   Report: Los Angeles spent $70 million in stimulus funds to create 7.76 jobs

   A new piece of evidence has emerged in the debate over the effectiveness of President Obama’s 2009 stimulus package, and it’s not good for Democrats. According to two newly released audits performed by the Los Angeles controller, L.A. spent enormous portions of the $594 million in stimulus funds it received on projects that created or saved just a handful of jobs. All told, the audits — available here and here [pdf] — examined $111 million in stimulus spending by the city’s Department of Transportation and Department of Public Works, and found that the money went to projects that created or retained just 54 jobs. That works out to roughly $2 million per job created. BRILLIANT GRANDMA!!!

   California took a record 100 days into the new fiscal year to nail down a budget, and that plan already is sporting a gaping hole.

   Now, the state will go to investors to borrow $14 billion in the next two weeks.

   If you don’t read much beyond those headlines, it’s easy to send the outrage meter spinning well into the red zone. How can California, with such horrendous financial problems, dare to dig itself into a deeper debt chasm?
