Agree to vote yes on the sales tax, but no on Measure 1. The State should reduce the sales tax revenue the State collects from the local counties from 5 to 4% so when local funding is needed for infrasture needs, like the flood control projects, or other local needs, those counties won’t have to raise sales taxes so high. Besides, I don’t agree that any Gov. should be allowed to save tax dollars for future needs and take that money out of circulation like ND will, if measure 1 passes.

This is only the second time the Red has flooded in October, the last time was last year. The Red is suppose to reach 20 & 1/2 feet. back when I was young, the river would be sitting at around 5 to 6 feet this time of year. Wet cycle, you bet ya.
However, paying a half cent tax on something that might not even happen, especially if the republicans get control of the house and senate. NO PORK REMEMBER???
I will vote no until it is written into law by the congress and passed by the president. Only then will I vote YES!
Hot debate. What do you think?

A half cent here….. a half cent there….. Pretty soon it adds up to real money.
I will vote no until I see what I am getting for my money. I don’t like handing out blank checks.

Frank, when the environmental impact statement for the project is complete (again) there may need to be mitigation added to the project as well. So if the 1/2 cent passes now, you may be asked to add another 1/2 cent or cent to the already existing taxes to pay for an even more expensive project.

Thanks for the input, Phil. It seems that the powers that be are dictating to the Corp of Engineers that we want a diversion regardless of the cost and of the impact on the folks in its path and downstream. I have long felt that changes to the river channel is a better solution, and because because authorities feel that the taxpayers have deep pockets and can pay for a Cadillac plan, this is the only solution.
I would like an opinion from the Corp that the option of using the existing channel is unworkable or too expensive before committing to building a diversion channel. I don’t think asking for an opinion is being unreasonable.

One need only review all of those half-cent increases that were initially set up with a sunset date that, when such date arrived, were shifted to something else or made permanent becase “people were paying it already, they won’t know the difference.” Think Fargodome tax as a prime example.
That is why this should be NO until something is ready to go.
Also the population best fervently insist the money goes to the intended purpose because it really won’t.

I voted dearly today and voted NO.
If John Boehner becomes speaker of the house, do you think he will care anything about the Fargo, Moorhead metro area and the river that runs through it? He will use one of his favorite lines that he used for the health- care bill; “Hell NO”!
Then where will our tax money go? Probably down the river.

Well first it will get wasted on investigation and hearings. The house will investigate everything from President Obama’s birth certificate to his toothpaste trying to impeach him for something. Never mind that in the meantime the country will go down in flames.
Then later on it won’t go anywhere cuz we know a huge government shut down is on the horizon.

The Forum Editorial mssed one important fact. There is not a project approved by the Federal Government. That may be a long ways off. Just because our officials have had many hours of meetings does not change this fact. When we have a project, know what it is and know its cost, that is the time to decide. For now, a no vote is the wisest bet.
