Apparently sunflowers like growing in strange places. There is one on the freeway, between the paved driving lane and the cement barrier immediately after the 27th ave exit if you are heading north. I noticed it about a month ago, and while it’s the only one over 2 feet tall, it isn’t the only one out there. A couple more, that seem to resembled dandelions on steroids more than actual sunflowers, are also growing just past the first one in the little patch of grass between the driving lane and the guardrail. Heavy rains and winds have now slumped the big one over, but it’s still trying to stand tall. It makes me smile every day on my way to work.

Congratulations on your success….. focus on that part. And hopefully you will get additonal pictures of birds enjoying the harvest.

Here’s a sunflower mystery. On a ship that sank in 130 BC they found evidence of pills that contained sunflowers. BUT -
The concoctions have also thrown archaeobotanists a few curve balls. Preliminary analyses of the ancient pills suggest they contain sunflower, a plant that is not thought to have existed in the Old World before Europeans discovered the Americas in the 1400s.
