Removal of racy college signs raises questions
September 3, 2010 at 7:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
The provocative signs students were asked to remove Thursday in some of Duluth’s college neighborhoods were violating a city ordinance, but it’s an ordinance that is enforced only in certain circumstances, police said.

Everyone is a victim, and everyone has to be offended. And since this is Duluth, this issue will probably be brought up at the next city council meeting, where the council as whole will meet, discuss, and probably pass an ordinance regards to these types of signs. This non-issue has snowballed into a big deal. Thanks DNT.

They already have an ordinance against it. Even the police admit that it is selectively enforced (which I think most people would probably agree is okay, since most signs aren’t disturbing anyone). There’s no way we’re ever going to have the police going around wasting their time to remove signs that aren’t bugging people. The law is already in place….what else do you think the city council could possibly do?

This is Duluth where they make laws just to make laws to amend another law that is already on the books.

Let us not forget that in this city, even the Ten Commandments cannot be displayed on public property.

That was a whole different issue. A federal judge had ruled that it violated the separation of church and state. The city council voted to have it removed in order to avoid a federal lawsuit from the Minnesota Civil Liberties Union.

Again, this who story is rediculous. Why are the police wasting their time rousting people/college students over signs. There are plenty of other things the police could have spent their time on making Duluth safer. The people complaining are a minority I believe while the majority just ignore the situation or find humor in it! Maybe the complainers should be told to sit down, shut up and let it pass.

I am beginning to wonder if Frank Jewell is going to run for some Political office that he needed to get some Attention.
This One Day out of 365 (and in reality one-Half a day) of students Celebrating a New Phase of their Life has been blown way out of proportion.
Party-Poopers are generally Defined as the ones not invited to the Party. I wish I’d have known about the signs….I would have driven by and HONKED in Support.
Donning my Scuba Gear AND my Hard Hat while wearing Elbow and Knee Pads for stating my opinion….have at it. LMAO

@michael molitor if your living conditions are so poor and terrible, move. nobody is forcing you to stay where you are. the university has been there for a long time. i always get a kick out of all of the complaints after someone moves near a university, or onto a busy street. what is your suggestion? closing down the university?? 10,000 students brings in a little more money to the city than your property taxes.

most people living around UMD would love to move but unfortunately we cant sell our houses to the slum lords as rentals because the city council screwed us with their stupid ordinance.

The college students are our future and you are our past!!!! Dont you remember what it was like to be young and have fun, or did you spend all your time reading about people having fun. This is a college town and that is why I live here. If we dont embrass the college students and show them Duluth is a great place to live they will leave and go to the cities. And if that happens our population will continue to get older and older until this town fades away. We need young people with their fresh ideas to continue to make Duluth grow.

Maybe instead of searching for Andrew in Duluth for a $10 gift certificate we should be looking for Humor in Duluth…..good luck with That!

How about getting rid of all the political office-seeker lawn signs? They are most certainly a visual blight. And how about getting rid of the unsolicited political phone calls that, somehow, skirt the National Do Not Call List regulations?
I think politicians need to be kicked with the same boot as the citizens they claim to serve..

It just disgusts me that these whiney, little d.b.’s get so much press. They’re COLLEGE STUDENTS – they’re young and full of the spirit of FUN! Geeze, don’t repress them now, they’ll have plenty of that P.C. garbage when they grow up and have “jobs.” Whiners should be ignored.

Please don’t tell me the Duluth PD actually had to respond to a harmless group of college kids waving around some silly cardboard signs. Unbelievable.

But also don’t whine when some little college reprobate rapes a girl at a frat party. If this is all in innocent fun, so should the fallout of attending a frat party. You can’t expect these Einsteins to figure out the difference.

These kids should be getting applause for the creativity of some of the signs. I drove by some of these parties and laughed my butt off because some of these signs were extremely creative. If Duluth doesnt start supporting these college kids they will all move to the cities after they graduate (like most of my friends who I graduated with from UMD did) and we will be stuck with a population of old crabby people who dont know how to have fun.

My guess is the folks who say this is funny or clever or expressing youthful exuberance have a nice big collection of “Girls Gone Wild!!” videos at home, and they are hoping this will somehow evolve into that kind of scene. Tell the girls they are smart and cheer them on so they come back next year with some stupid signs and take off their tops…

Aren’t college kids always complaining they always get a bad rap as partiers, litterers and out of control kids in this town? Seems to me they just sealed their image with the signs. I think I am going to call the council and complain about all the political ones, as those offend me as I drive through the city to and from work. Could we get any more ridiculous (and no, I could care less what their or anyone else’s signs say, I have learned how to ignore things like this).
