Fargo has been framed! Because it has fewer hills than other cities in the poll, speed traps can’t be hidden as well, and everyone knows where they are. If they can’t be seen they can’t be counted, placing Fargo at an unfair disadvantage. And when caught speeding we can’t use the excuse “Officer, I was going down a hill and didn’t want to hit the brakes”.

I have seen police cars sitting in peoples private driveways, with snow banks on each side to hide them. If this was my home I would kick them off my private property.
Also, I have seen our motorcycle police sitting on public sidewalks, on side streets near main streets, waiting for speeders. If you or I drove our motorcycles on public sidewalks, we would be given tickets for sure.
Therefore, Fargo police must think that it is OK for them to break the laws to catch speeders.

The fine is 500 bucks. And they should get the fine like we would. They should also get fined for speeding, running red lights and stop signs, and turning on their light to go through a red light at 3:00 AM. I’ve seen all of the above, many times.

I would welcome them in my driveway.

If their definition of a speed trap is where everyone is speeding, that seems kind of stupid. There are two streets in particular that I feel the posted limits are too low. 9th Ave Sw> Westrac Dr.(25) in Fargo and the 9th St S(25)>Veterans Blvd(35) in West Fargo. 9th St in West Fargo is a four lane road with a center turning lane, 30 is 5-10 lower than it should be. Driving the speed limit just feels unnatural at these locations and I’ve seen Police just sitting waiting to catch people on these roads.

Traffic enforcement is not money making? I would think it is more so than just driving around or waiting for a call! Who would make such a B.S. comment?
I would think you would want more squad cars visible than having unmarked cars doing that squad cars job.
These cities post these lower speed limits so they can catch people speeding for added income. Yes, speed limits are good and needed but don’t lie about it.
Also if you see a motorcycle cop parked on a sidewalk take a picture of it and send it to the city commissioners. You don’t have to give your name if you choose not to.

North Dakota’s state-set fines are so low it’s impossible to make money off them. To state that Fargo reduces speed limits to increase income is ridiculous.

How about arresting someone because they broke the law, and not necessarily for the money, now there’s a idea.

I hope they don’t count those blitzes in the construction areas because, by definition, it can’t be a speed TRAP if you know exactly where the cops will be. Only in North Dakota will the cops say, “We’ll be at the 45th construction site today from 10 till 2 catching everyone who’s speeding,” AND THEY STILL GET LIKE 115 SPEEDERS.
That’s like saying I was caught in a RAIN TRAP when I went outside during a downpour even though I knew it was going to rain all day.

““The majority of the drivers will drive in their comfort zone, and if that comfort zone is over the posted speed limit, then the posted speed limit is too low,†The is the most ridiculous thing I have ever hear. The college students drive about 40 in front of my house, guess we should raise the speed limit there for them. Who cares if someone could get killed walking across the street to visit their friends. The only speed trap that I have seen lately is on the 12th Ave bridge- one officer on the bridge with a radar gun and five or six cars at the end of the bridge to stop people. People, they are enforcing the speed limits, maybe people will think a bit before they speed.

Wow, so the largest city in the state has the most speed traps? Who woulda thunk?
Do people actually get paid for these “studies”?
One thing that is disappointing is all the whining about it. When I first got my license, cops would literally pull you over for anything, including not turning your head to look before changing lanes. Funny thing is, people were safer drivers back then and didn’t constantly complain about the cops doing their job.

This sounds weird for me to even say, but this actually doesn’t bother me. I’m no goody-goody, but I see a LOT of egregious speeding out there.
People harp on why they don’t make themselves more visible, thereby deterring speeders, but there are only so many officers you can put out there. So, speed traps are a psychological ploy to make drivers think they could be anywhere, getting them to slow down without a cop in sight.

yeah- a hidden police car MAKES YOU SPEED. Get a clue- this is a self reported list- sounds like fargo is second in having the largest amount of whiners in the nation. Don’t speed and it won’t matter where the cops are. Wow- is it really that easy? takes even less effort than whining about it.

Ummmm…I’m no statistician, but wouldn’t it only be logicial that there’s more ANYTHING where there’s more population? Fargo is probably the ND city with the most white cars in it, too. I’m not sure what conspiracy theory that proves, but I’m sure we could think one up! I hadn’t gotten a speeding ticket in 14 years. This summer I’ve gotten two. Know that that proves? I was speeding. End of story.

Instead of wasting time looking for police “speed traps” and other little injustices to complain about, I like to look at those silly little signs and adjust my speed accordingly. I’m going to have to keep an eye out for those rain traps, though. They sound sneaky. I’d better start to panic now and save time later…

This article is just hilarious, Fargo and Grand Forks the biggest speed traps in ND. Two of the biggest cities in the state with biggest populations, big college towns, and a lot of low mentality. If people can’t follow the speed limit then they deserve a ticket especially if its in a school or construction zone. People talk about ND fines being so low, that’s because we have a point system on our licences. What they should do is raise the fines for the out of state drivers because they are not on our point system, then maybe there wouldn’t be so talk about our fines. Minn fines are ridiculous and it still doesn’t slow them down, of course there no one from Minn that knows how to drive anyway.

If you get caught that is your own fault for driving too fast. I’ve been nabbed a few times and deserved the tickets.
Yes there are areas that need the speeds raised. To do 25-30 in a four lane street is too low. Four lanes should be at least 35-40. No higher.
The only problem I have with the Fargo police are the ones that ride your butt, because you are doing the speed limit then fly by you with no lights on thinking they are driving at the Indy 500. Just to go to the donut shop. If I was to do that I would be ticketed on the spot.
Then there are the ones that don’t use directionals or go from the far right lane and cut in front of everyone to get into the far left lane almost causing accidents. They are the ones that are going to get someone hurt. I sorry but policemen are not above the law and need follow the same laws unless they are on a call.

@brucealmighty if i was in a neighborhood where speeding was a problem i would welcome an officer to sit in my driveway or on my sidewalk. The fact is that people are speeding through neighborhoods with children playing and shouldn’t have to worry about a car going 10mph over the limit on a side street. The officers aren’t doing this to be pricks, they are doing it to help keep our roads safe. The sooner people realize this the better their day will go. Thank you local officers.

marc, But they also are breaking the law by doing so Maybe we should be like Gommer, on the Andy Griffin Show, as go out and yell, Citizens Arrest, Citizens Arrest. I am 62 and have had only one speeding ticket in my life. Just returned home from the Army and I had bought a new 1969 Mustang Mach 1. Yup, the police had their eye out for that kind of car. Was doing 35 in a 40MPH zone. Nowadays, if I do 35 in a 35 zone, I get passed like I am standing still and given the finger by young girls talking on their cell phones as they cut back in front of me. God I hate getting old.

One more comment out of subject. About getting old. Why did the Forum take away the print size + to increase the size of the print. It is hard for a lot of people to read small print. Anyone else having this problem?

What operating system are you using? XP, Vista, etc? There is a setting that let’s you enlarge font sizes on your computer.

Brucealmighty; I am a little older then you and I have never gotten a citation of any kind. I almost always drive about 5 miles over the limit. To me this proves the police are not out to get you like a lot of people think. The ones being stopped are going 10, 15, or more over the speed limit. How ever watch out for the rain traps, You get no leeway at all in this area.

These young people should hate acting like idiots and jerks, not us getting old. But a lot of them don’t even know how to spell respect.

I wonder what city in ND has the most traffic lights, miles of road, houses, street signs, one ways streets, two way streets, parking lots, parking spaces, resturaunts, movie theaters, schools, bad cops, good cops, police cars, fire trucks, grocery stores, department stores, fire hydrants….could we please get some tax payer money allocated to pay someone to find out these very important statistics?

I wonder when FPD will follow their own laws. Last week I was almost run off the road in the University/13th Ave. S/4th St. S area by squad car #24. Rolled right through the 4-way stops, didn’t pay attention to the double turn lane on 13th, and was generally driving like it was drunk and/or retarded. Arrogant jerks is my opinion.
You are describing a lot of everyday drivers now, stupid arrogant jerks and these are the ones without the cellphones permanently attached to their ear and mouth, I can’t call them what I want due to the “be nice to everyone thingy” here.

I would like to see police crack down on people who do not use their turn signals. It is disrespectful and dangerous to change lanes or turn without signaling.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 22 2
When I use my turn signal for a lane change someone always makes shore I cannot change lanes in front of them. So I see that I am far enough in front to make the change.
Like or Dislike: 4 3
There is definitely a fair amount of jerks on the road. But remember that common courtesy is a two-way street. It doesn’t become a trend if the majority of drivers say “oh well”.
I was passing someone on the interstate in the left lane. I used my signal and the person in the center lane slowed down to let me merge. At the same time, someone was passing him on the right and decided to merge without using his signal. He probably perceived that it was safe because he was far enough ahead of the center lane driver. Barely avoided that accident. The moral of the story? Use your turn signal to warn other drivers you can’t see.

Tony O; I do use my turn signals. I meant that I make sure I am far enough in front to make sure the other driver does not pull a fast one on me.;

I would like to see more people use their turn signal BEFORE changing lanes or making a turn. The signal is meant to warn other drivers. Not much of a warning if it’s after the fact.

Saw a bumper sticker once that read, ” Forget world peace, envision using your turn signal.”

so baddoc- did you call in a report this car? let me guess= ‘they wouldnt do anything anyway’. Easy to sit on here and say anything. Takes a spine to actually confront the problem face to face.

Lived here 11 years and never been stopped, then again I have been passed on 13th Avenue south during the flashing school zone lights. Don’t want a ticket? Don’t speed. The other thing I love are those that say the “police should be going after real criminals.” Statistically, the incidence of violent crime in Fargo is very low. Most people in Fargo/Cass County are injured through traffic incidents, either with or without alcohol. Law enforcement is simply going after those behaviors that are most likely to cause injury in this area.

I really don’t care how many speed traps are in a city, if the speed limit is 35 I go 35, 25 I go 25, sign says slow in a school zone I go slow in a school zone. Darn , it’s so easy and makes me feel good that I am a law abiding citizen, and most of all if someone happens to bolt out in front of me and I don’t see them in time and hit them at a low rate of spped chances are thet will live to see another day and I don’t have to live my life knowing that I killed someone.

Speed traps don’t become speed traps until people speed.
Like or Dislike: 8 3
we need more speed traps. people drive too fast and don’t pay attention. I always leave so I have enough time to get where I’m going and still have time left over. I know that everyone thinks they don’t have enough time. they’ll have lots of time when they are laying in a hospital bed.
