Other than Broadway, the Alexandria area is very bicycle-friendly. The roads are well-maintained and have wide shoulders. With downtown relatively small, it’s easy for cyclists to take side streets in lieu of riding on Broadway proper. Many businesses have rear entrances anyway. I’m not sure creating some kind of expansion or change to Broadway to allow for bikes is even needed.
On the topic of encouraging people to ride more, I am all for that. As stated, Alexandria is very bicycle-friendly. Cycling is a life-long activity that relieves stress and is just fun. After riding in the MS-TRAM and seeing riders living with MS riding 300 miles, as well as riders in the 70s and even upper 80s riding, bicycling can be part of a very healthy lifetyle. Joining or creating a cycling club can also provide a great way to socialize with others in the area.
Alexandria is fortunate to have great cycling shops, roads, and trails available. Though some hearty riders ride every day, realistically someone could ride 6 months of the year. I’ve heard of someone who lives in Glenwood and commutes to Alex for work. Many who live in and around Alex could commute by bike. Just think of getting off a hard day of work and getting on a bike for an x-mile-long bike ride home. You get home and your stress is gone. Take the long way home and you don’t have to go to the gym. Save money on gas, gym membership dues, etc…
Just some thoughts. People in Alex are very fortunate to have such a wonderful area for cycling.
