BISMARCK Two years ago, advocates of an initiative to ban hunting within fenced game preserves fell 129 petition signatures short of putting their measure in front of North Dakota voters. Continue Reading

Al Jaeger, stated in another story that the other eight initiatives could be placed on the June ballot if they received enough signatures. I ask Mr. Jaeger this question. Why is there a deadline, if your not going to adhere to it? Or are you just trying to give some a break that you are in favor of?

No Bruce, here is how it works. Any time there is a General Election, be it November, June, or whenever else any particular state wants to have one, people can submit measures and initiatives to be brought up on a ballot. The deadline isn’t some sort of make-it-or-break-it limit. They just can’t be on the November ballot. The can, of course, continue to collect signatures and submit it for the June ballot instead. It is part of what makes the system actually work. People can bring up issues for a vote without needed to have it introduced into state legislature. So, no, Mr. Jaeger isn’t breaking the rules, he is following them.
