County to seek land options for new library

WORTHINGTON Responses from the city of Worthington and Plum Creek Library System (PLCS) were presented to Nobles County Commissioners on Tuesday after board members sought feedback on a potential collaboration that it is ready to move forward with plans for a new library. Continue Reading

I really think now is a bad time to build anything new however, I agree that adding a fire station to a library and meeting place is probably not the best idea. If the City does decide to go ahead with the plans for the library, do it well. Please, not just another square building. Combining the library with a meeting place is a good idea. Modern libraries are much more then a place to read and pick up books. They are communication centers and places for community events. How wonderful it would be to have a large open place to meet and hold public events. It would really be an asset to the community and a gem if it’s kept downtown. Ever consider a parking garage under the building? I don’t see how the Campbell Soup site could be too small. It runs what? 3 blocks long? This suggestion isn’t downtown, but what about the land that is for sale across from the Fairgrounds? I don’t know if it’s still for sale or not.

County Administrator Mel Ruppert estimated the county spends $1,000 per year just in employee time to fold the pay stubs, stuff them in envelopes and distribute them to departments each pay day.
- Approved the implementation of the E-TimeCards software program from RTVision at an initial cost of $15,520 and annual costs of $1,790. The web-based system will simplify the timekeeping and payroll processes, and will take approximately six months to implement.————
Unless my math is wrong, it now costs $1000 per year. The “new system” will cost $15,250 plus $1790 per year. Where is the savings?

Having a library beside a fire hall sounds like an accident waiting to happen. Imagine firefighters hurriedly trying to get equipment out for a fire or other emergency about the time a group of kids are going to or leaving the library. I would think you wouldn’t want a lot of library patrons cars parked near a fire hall either as some of that equipment can take a lot of room to maneuver.

Another suggestion for a new library would be the former outdoor pool site. That would be adjacent to the fish rearing ponds and across from the lake. It would be a nice bike ride or walk for most of the citizens of Worthington.
