Although there’s no property tax increase on the horizon, West Fargo residents will likely see higher rates for water and garbage pickup in 2011.

Will somebody please remind me why being the fastest growing city in the state is a good thing? Obviously the new people coming in do not increase revenue enough to cover the cost to the city of having them. I want to go back to being a small town, not become another Fargo! OOps, might be too late.

Isn’t a fee the same as a tax increase?

Not really. A fee is a charge for a specific service. Most cities use these fees to directly offset the cost of that service and it is not dependent on general fund expenses. Fees can’t be deducted as an expense. The great Norman Coalman pledged not to raise taxes in St Paul as mayor. What he did was to create a fee for everything. So your taxes didn’t go up but you might pay a $300 a year fee for street sweeping and plowing. Ya gotta love us Republicans. Always thinking of other ways to separate you from your money without calling it a tax.

Meant to say fees can’t be deducted as a tax on your income tax returns.

Don’t you want all those great government services?

Try digging a well and hauling your own garbage. See how much that costs and then look at the increase again.
