Obama: Things could be worse
July 26, 2010 at 3:32 am in Grand Forks Herald
President Barack Obama, who rocketed to the White House promising “change you can believe in,” is now telling voters they shouldn’t change a thing. His message for the fall elections, which are looking ominous for his Democrats, is that Republicans caused the nation’s economic troubles, but he and the Democrats are starting to fix them. So stick with the Democrats and don’t go back to the GOP. Continue Reading

Things were fine until old man Reid and old lady Pelosi took control. Obama just exacerbated the damage.

Change fewer and fewer Americans believe! 500 billion out of medicare when baby boomers are retiring. Is that an actuarily sound public policy when hospitals in ND are paid about 50% by medicare what regular patients are paying? Earl Pomeroy made possible the Pelosi, Reed, and Obama dangerous socialist policy that will result in health care rationing, ” death squads”. According to the most recent Rasmussen poll 58% want this bill repealed. It is time we hold our elected official accountable and not be distracted by what politicians “say ” but by what they do.

Obama is just trying to fill up the large hole Bush and his crime family dug. Just look at how tax cuts for the rich worked for us-meaning actual working stiffs. Funny how it never ‘trickles down’. There are more and more Democrats bowing to corporations too. Did you know the right wing activist SCOTUS took the limits off corporations campaign contributions-yup- now the big business guys like BP can buy their own stooge in Congress. I’m sure the chamber of congress likes that.
Putting the republicans back in power will just mean more tax cuts for the rich-that’s their answer to everything.

Jeff, the blame Bush mantra doesn’t work anymore. Everything is now Obama’s fault. He is to blame.

How about Obama starting on flat ground-not the big hole Bush and his buddies dug. Than I would agree with you. One has to put everything in context. It’s really quite simple. Like Bush shipping all the jobs overseas and giving tax breaks to do it-not my kind of America. Putting both wars on our kids credit cards is not cool either.

Jeff, if you remember the wars started on 911. I suppose you prefer surrender. This is the Obama depression. He has put everything on your great- grandchildren’s credit cards. It is Carter all over again. We need a new Reagan. Obama is bankrupting us and your taxes are going up very soon.

No, the war did NOT start on 9/11.
We were attacked on 9/11, and not for the first time.
The “war on terror” didn’t begin until a few weeks after 9/11, only after we’d figured out who was behind the attacks.
Or, are you referring to the second war in Iraq?
Both of these fiascos began under GWB, who never put the fiscal cost of either war into the budget balance. Or, imbalance.

no that is when for the first time the majority of this country recognized that we are at war. We have been at war with these terrorists for over 30 years. It is just that most people did not recognize it for what is was. And incredibly there are still those who do not.

LOL. You neo-cons would crucify Reagan today as being a liberal. Your party has become too ignorant and extreme, what a pair on you to think Reagan would still be on your side, lol. Then again, you’re ignorant so I’m being redundant.

Do the majority of Americans now believe this is” change we can believe can believe in”? I actually read Obama’s book where he wrote “my mother was white as cream and my father was black as tar and I saw no diference.” I had hoped he was a “post racial president” who would unite us as Americans not categorised by the color of our skin. I am white but my soul mate was black when we both struggeled through graduate school or at least we thought we were struggeling. We were a team trying to cope with what we felt were unatainable academic expectations. I could not be more disappointed with president Barrak Obama. Being idealistic I did not recogonize the evil initially of President Obama spending 20 years listening to Reverend Wright who seems to hate whites and even America. If I have miscathegorised Mr. Wright, I would love to discuss the content of his sermons with you so you can educate me that it was actually not hate speech. Police officer Crowley was accused by this president of “acting stupidly” for arresting a Harvard scholar law professor who had alledgely mooned him. I would expect to be arrested if I acted this way. This Arizona law suite is another case of his racially dominate point of view. I have been post racial for 35 years and know a racially biased person when I see one. I made a mistake when I voted for this racially devisive president.

This country will not change on the basis of a democrat or republican candidate. Of course they have the difference in views of big government and who should receive tax cuts, but really it all boils down to the United States of America is run by the greed of large corporations and political groups with $$$. Elected officials will cater to their voters. We have all heard “my vote does not count anyways†well that statement is very real and true. For most of us everyday citizens our opinions are just that. But we all need hope right. Ask yourself, when was the last time someone you elected brought about the change you were looking for? Maybe you all got some answers and I’m dead wrong.

Things could be worse. How comforting, and about as presidential as say… going on The View. This guy is the worst president ever, and I lived through the Carter years!!! November is almost here, and 2012 not that far away.

I’m sorry, but a great leader doesn’t spout off flippant, arrogant comments like, “Things could be worse.” A great leader speaks clear to the reality of the current challenges while giving compelling vision to where we need to be, and then finally provides a detailed plan on how to get there. Charisma is exposed through the fires of challenging circumstances. Strong leadership shines through in all situations.

Is “Things could be worse” any worse than, “All we have to fear is fear itself”?
Or, “Mission Accomplished”, how many years ago, and we’re still mired in that mess?

First of all, I’m certainly not a Bush apologist (he was a deficient leader IMHO) so bringing up all the Bushisms like the “Mission Accomplished” statement does nothing garner support for Obama. I’m curious though, how does pointing out the faults of previous leaders do anything for Obama’s credibility as a leader? Yet this is the continuos mantra of Obama supporters and it’s getting old. He (and his supporters) needs to stop blaming the previous administration and start delivering. Seriously, to think Obama is a great leader is an absolute joke. He’s not, he’s a charismatic speaker who wowed America with subjective, idealistic sound bites which Americans gobbled up.

The state the country was in in the months leading up to the last election, it’s no wonder the population were ready for idealistic sound bytes. Most of us, (the majority, silent or not), had had enough of the same ol’ same ol’.
In October of that year, I did a little ‘survey’ of my own.
Strangely enough, the older the person was that I asked, “what do you think of the election, this time?”, the more likely they were to say, “Well, we need something different, that’s for sure.” Then, they’d kind of look around to be sure no one was listening and say, “I’m going to vote for that young black fella”. And get all embarassed.
Myself, I think the jury’s still out on what kind of leader Obama is. And I believe it will be until sometime after he’s out of office. It’s far too early to say if he ‘was’ a good or bad President.

My concerns with Obama related to his pro-”choice” beliefs as well as just how far he would go in regard to the gay agenda. I still view him, as I do all politicians, as someone to not fully trust. That being said, our economy was in a mess long before he was elected. When Clinton left office we had a huge budget surplus. Then came 9/11. The invasion of Afghanistan was justified since the Taliban openly provided a haven for terrorist training camps. The invasion of Iraq was a mistake. I opposed it in a letter to the Mail Bag prior to the invasion. What I predicted happened. Easy victory…seemingly never-ending entanglement. The mission was not accomplished. Besides trying to fight two wars after cutting taxes, we had individuals over-spending their personal budgets because they thought the good times would never end. Good times always end. Nature has its cycles. Fewer foxes, more rabbits. More rabbits, more foxes. More foxes, fewer rabbits…The cycle goes on. The economy is more complicated but similar. It will have its ups and downs. Double-digit growth is not sustainable. When a crash comes, it hurts. A turn-around without pain is impossible. Obama repeatedly said, “It won’t be easy.†When a person is treated with either chemo-therapy or radiation for cancer, the side-effects sometimes seem worse than the cure. However, most people, if they have a chance to keep living, will tolerate the loss of hair and nausea in order to rid their bodies of a malignancy. Obama’s severest critics focus only on the loss of hair and the nausea. Things could be worse. Our economy is improving. My meager investment in my 403b has risen significantly since March 2009. Is the glass half-full or half empty? I see it as half-full and rising. Some choose to see it as completely empty. That’s their choice.
