Our view: Stop thinking Duluth schools are just schools
July 21, 2010 at 7:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
The new library and media center at Denfeld High School is being built so that it juts out a bit from the rest of the building, so that it’s surrounded by ample parking and so that it can be seen and easily accessed from busy Grand Avenue.

Obviously, the article writer does not live in the neighborhood. Along 6th st. there once were tennis courts and a small ball field, always in use by neighborhood families and individuals. It has been decided that a bigger building and more parking lots, along with several hundred more teenagers, during school time, would be wonderful. We currently have a library on “very busy” Grand Ave. What we don’t have any longer, is ANY family friendly green space or safe play areas within several blocks.

The school board chose to ignore the massive outcry of citizens’ concerns regarding the loss of “community” surrounding the schools that are closing in the beginning. I say the board (especially certain SB members) chose to ignore those concerns that did not fall in line with the massive redistribution of schools plan. When “evaluating” data the board’s consultants selectively used only certain data that fit into their already decided plans. That is NOT comprhensive. That would be called misuse of information. Unfortunately some of the SB members don’t understand the concept of “comprehensive.”
Also, quite tired of the DNT’s cheerleading and free advertising for the School District. Enough backpatting already.
Hot debate. What do you think?

“Fewer than 30 percent of Duluth families have school-aged children, according to the district. Yet all property owners are paying for the Long-Range Facilities Plan.”
That little tidbit of information might have been better left unsaid. It’s kind of like rubbing salt into the wounds of all those that are ending up paying for this debacle.

Say people, the ‘communitys needs’ and the ‘adults’ needs are for these buildings to EDUCATE students. All these extra-curricular functions merely dilute the core mission of school facilities.

A school is a school is a school. It’s a building.
Now, the quality of the people you put in them determines the quality of the institution. And I’m not just talking about the teachers and the school board and the administration. I’m talking about the students.
Four to five years before a kid ever steps foot in a school, he or she has been nurtured to become the kind of person and learner they will be. These initial years of life are without question some of the most important ones. Everyday, I see too many parents that have failed their kids because they were not prepared to parent, because they were too lazy to parent, or because they were too stupid to parent. I get that there is no manual for how to do it, but there are definetly “right ways” and “wrong ways.”
Too often people are doing it the wrong way and then when their kid doesn’t learn, or fails some standardized test, they turn and blame it on the system, as if the system had anything to do with how unprepared, incompetent, lazy, or stupid they were as parents.
NEWS FLASH: Our view: A family is not just a family.
Whatever. It’s all what we collectively make of it as a society. And as someone who feels we are collectively failing our kids, I wish the lazies and stupids would be held accountable or stop procreating.
Rant done.
