Pelican Rapids parents mixed on four-day school week

PELICAN RAPIDS, Minn. Cathy Vague is your typical sports mom. And as an on-the-go mother of two, her concern for Pelican Rapids’ change to a four-day school week is one that she says may affect her children and their sports schedules.

The fastest way for a town to die is to ignore the importance of schools to families. Why would a family move to a community where their kids can not get the best education? (In making this statement, I am not commenting on the quality of teachers in this community, but rather speaking out in support of them. They are to be commended for doing their best in a community that obviously doesn’t want to maintain or improve their school system) The shortsightedness of voters who defeated the referendum (I’m sure a lot of them had no children at home) will encourage families to move to towns where the importance of schools is recognized.

Part of it is families are starting to get outnumbered by the retired and part-time residents who don’t care about schools.

Leave it to some idiot to make this a teachers union issue. Un*******believable! “Their getting another day off per week should not be a part of this issue but once again it is.” There is not one reference in the article to unions, getting a day off, or any other idiotic blathering. The problem is lack of funding from local taxpayers. The school board chose to go to a four day week to reduce heating costs, electicity costs, meal costs, some wages, travel expenses, etc. “Superintendent Deborah Wanek said a lot of public input was considered before the decision was made.” The elected officials collected public input and made an informed decision. I guess there is always a certain percentage of the population who’s glass is half full and a certain percentage that doesn’t have a glass!

Unfortunately, in today’s litigious society, i don’t know how one could be a teacher and NOT be in a union. Teachers have to pay to be part of the union. I am not a teacher, but I have a friend who is. A lot of teachers choose to be in the union for litigation support alone. All it takes for a teacher to get smeared through the news is one upset student with a vendetta, the unions are there to protect teachers. But please, continue to make uninformed ridiculous statements, this is the internet after all.

Let’t hear some facts opine, rather than all of the inaccurate generalizations. Which members of which union spoke at which meetings and which example of pushing something down someone’s throats did the local board bow to? Speaking of the lack of brains, oh well, forget it, you woudln’t understand if I typed real slow…..

A four day week doesn’t give as good an education. More work needs to be crammed into less days. With 5 days, if you don’t understand something when you do your homework, you can get caught up the next day hopefully, but you won’t be as far behind. A longer lesson in less days just isn’t as good. Trust me.
