Speeding drivers on the radar for July enforcement
July 18, 2010 at 7:29 am in Alexandria Echo Press
To counter the trend of motorists increasing speeds during summer, Minnesota law enforcement agencies are stepping up speed patrols in July. Continue Reading

I am one of those drivers that everyone hates to get behind becasue I habitually set my cruise to the speed limit and go. I have to chuckle when I read a story like this and then later while driving watch as off and on duty law enforcement officers as well as cadets in training pass me on the road. How does one justify issuing a citation for speeding when they themselves are as guilty as the rest?

Don’t know how to edit a post so I’ll post this separately.
Although I raise the question above, don’t misunderstand that I do appreciate the effort to slow drivers down. It is getting more and more dangerous out there and personally I think tailgaiting is a bigger problem than speeding. Speeding is only a problem when not allowing enough space for reaction time. It’s amazing how often I find someone riding my tail at 70mph so close that I can’t see their headlights in my mirror. What happened to the 3-second rule or one car length per each 10mph spacing? Those that do this not only endanger their own lives but the lives of everyone in their own car (their own children), the car they follow, and probably a half-dozen around them in heavy traffic. Oh, how often I wish I could disable their vehicle when they follow too close to me!

About the only way you could do that, Bob, would be with a sufficently powerful ElectroMagneticPulse.
While I beleive it’s possible to make something like that out of an old microwave oven, it would most likely disable your own vehicle.
So, I guess you see that you’re not alone in that idea?

Now, if we could just engineer an idea that would cause cellphones to explode when used in a motor vehicle!

b.a.c. – believe it or not, the technology already exists to enable the 3-second rule to be enforced. Now we’ve just got to convince vehicle manufacturers it’s a feature that customers are willing to pay for.
Or I guess the government could mandate it … seems the Feds like stuff like that

Now, that would be great! At first, I thought of the stop and go traffic in the Cities after major events, but if you’re doing 5 mph, three seconds wouldn’t be all that much distance.
The only other possible problem I can think of would be a passing situation. But again, I think the tech would find a way to get by that one.
