It’s about time they plugged the hole they made. A tribute to the competency of private corporations in policing themselves. Does anyone believe they need less governmental regulation?

Ummm….didn’t Obama say he was “in charge” of this operation? How did that work out 87 days later? And if you don’t think there is a mile of red tape and regulations up the ying yang involved in running any private corp. then I don’t know what planet your on. I believe this was the first screw up in 50 years, if only Congress could have that kind of record.

Never heard of the Exxon Valdez, didya?

And, on who’s watch did that happen?
Hot debate. What do you think? 20 29
b.a.c.; And who’s watch did 9/11 happen on. What difference does it make anyway. there presidents, not gods.
I just pray that this works, and it does not have too much pressure and blows up beneath the ocean floor. Like some scientists have said could happen.
This would be like a volcano of oil erupting out of the oceans floor, with no way to stop it. God forbid if this would happen.

Yeah I did, believe the captain was drunk at the time so tell me which government oversight would have prevented that, since it was obvious they were already in violation of maritime law.
Hot debate. What do you think? 23 10
I don’t really think they “made” the hole. It resulted from an industrial accident. You seem to be framing it as though it was intentional. It wasn’t – except in the minds of the conspiracy-of-big-oil theorists ……

I’m so glad it finally stopped.
And Diem it would have been nice if the regulators they did have were competent and actually did what we paid them to do =(

Finally the Obama spill has been stopped. Not by him, but by BP. Obama lied and pelicans died.

Right, “They’re presidents, not gods”.
Bush lied, and penguins died.
What the heck is the difference?

About 3,000 people died that’s the difference.

Then maybe 911 was the fault of Islamic terrorists and not Bush.

OK, three thousand died. But that was in a completely different circumstance.
And, GWB was at the helm when that happened, right? Then he got on the TV and gave his world-famous, “Crusade speech”.
And you wonder why Muslims are PO’d?
Hot debate. What do you think? 18 26
They are PO’d no matter what we do. They have been fighting us since the 7th century. Why do they hate us? Because we are infidels. Unless we all plan on converting to Islam we had better get used to fighting back. Thank God for the crusades. If we hadn’t fought back then we would all be bowing to Mecca.

Muslims are mad all the time at everybody, who cares. God bless President Bush.

See, You Liberals should be happy. Bush tried to deal with the worlds overpopulation problem. And Alice, if they hadnt started this they wouldnt have died and they wouldnt continue to die today. If you want to cry for those who attacked us you have my blessing to move to the mountains of Pakistan and preach your love for poor poor Muslims all you want. lets see how kind they are to you. The only mistake Bush made was not wipini the Taliban off the face of the earth too. But then again, he did rid the world of Saddam and his sons. Seems to me the world owes Bush a big time thank you. Now get your Burka and veil and move along.

Alice, I love it when liberal pro-terrorists inflate the numbers. We killed more Japanese and Germans then we lost in WWII. So I guess we shouldn’t have fought. We should have just let them do their worst?

MMS dropped the ball, they didn’t read the plan, and passed it with a little note to BP.
There are pages upon pages of regulations and acts that govern leasing, drilling, and cleaning up. It appears that they were waiving some of those regulations to pass a drilling plan in less than a month that referenced a Japanese home shopping website for their cleanup materials, and talked about walrus and other cold water animals and that their would be minimal impact if there should be a spill.
MMS rushed to approve 27 drilling plans after the explosion, and waived the environmental scutiny that they are supposed to receive prior to approval on 26 of them.
The government doesn’t need more regulation, it needs it’s clowns to apply the ones we already have.
I hope the cap holds, it still remains to be seen what affect all that toxic chemical dispersant that the EPA allowed BP to use on the gulf, will have on the environment. UK banned it’s use. Even IF that doesn’t ruin the Gulf area for decades to come, all that oil will.

After reading some of that, and other regulatory measures, I am not convinced that our government’s hands are clean. The rules are there been there for years….but what better way to institute a perpetual arguement than to play patty-cake with incompetent officials that willingly looked the other way.
Funny that some would point the finger at BP, claiming some moral highground of responsibility that all private corporations MUST have…where’s the outrage over the government’s failiure to apply the regulations ON THE BOOKS? Why don’t we hold our government to the highest standard yet? Shouldn’t they be the ones to pave the way to ethical and responsible actions and effective and meaningful application of public policy?
We elect officials to run it, they appt or hire other people… and they ALL appear to be running this country into the ground.
When will America wake up and send a clear message to DC?
our government and it’s minions are directly involved in overlooking and waiving regulations that were originally set in place to help prevent or to deal with this. If government is filled with unethical incompetent boobs who won’t do their job, how can the public expect a private company to do what the government isn’t…their JOB.

Note to all of you who were affected by the disemvoweling above:
It was a computer glitch. We were upgrading our software and, after completing the upgrade, the disemvowelment functions seemed to be hungrier for vowels than we thought. We’ve gone through the above posts, as well as those on other threads throughout the site, and re-instated the vowels where we could. In some cases, the vowels were permanently lost, but them’s the breaks. The software has been adjusted to prevent this from happening in the future.
We apologize for the inconvenience.

Someone on a radio station out of Louisana said that Goldman-Sachs and BP’s yachting president both sold their BP stocks just a few weeks before the oil well exploded. If this is true and the oil well was sabotoged then this world is even more evil than I thought.
Like or Dislike: 14 7
It’s been exposed that BP was having problems with that rig and an email to MMS illuminated the problem back on Feb 13th. BP continued to email MMS with updates about problems, they did not hide it. Our President stepped out in from a fighter jet, with a flag behind him, and LIED to the public. his speech http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/remarks-president-energy-security-andrews-air-force-base-3312010
The government had been informed…and they did NOTHING to stop BP from continuing along on their way to ruining the Gulf. BP nearly blew the rig up, about 6 weeks before they actually did. It would be interesting to have a little DICOVERY into the relationships and emails flying around during the period of time from Feb 13th to the explosion…I want to see who’s been in contact.
BP started the campaign a few years ago to rebrand themselves and make the move to alternative energy. They been busy investing in wind turbines and getting them up and running. They had wind power generation facility in India and sold it…but I suppose, if India won’t swallow Climate change, it’s more profitable to spend investment money in countries that they think will.
$10 million in land and money to one enviromental group that turns around and sells that land back to the government for a tidy price. A couple Million$$$ to Audubon, Sierra Club and the EDF, and they might just look the other way once in a while.
People were definately lookin’ the other way…so freaking FAR AWAY, to let BP come in and use OUR Gulf , and wreck it. The landlord(USA government) didn’t apply regulations, and environmentalist groups didn’t sound the alarm. Welcome to the world of bought off watchdogs. Just dangle a big enough “steak” to entice complacency.
“You never want to let a serious crisis to go to waste.” How sad that statement is…it uses the misfortunes of people to make excuses to make more regulations that they will undoubtedly ignore anyway.

jujubee–this world is more evil than it ever was even a few years ago–There was a time when Christians would have never have been openly mocked the way they are today–(take even on just this board for an example, and this is supposed to be in a conservative area(?)–I’ve experienced, it and so have others from what I am reading here. Churches worry about sending missionaries overseas. I say America needs them here more than foreign countries right now.

Kerry Hoeschen: Read the news everyday, they are in there everyday demanding something and at the same time christians are mocked. If you don’t care -that’s fine but I personallly get a little put out with my religion being knocked all the time while others are demanding I cannot have Christmas ornments up, a manger can’t be displayed on a lawn anymore, christian prayers cannot be part of our schools but others are demanding their religion can be this is B.S. whether you like it or not. It’s my right to not like it and I’m sticking to it. Don’t you listen to the news?
Hot debate. What do you think? 15 16
Oh, I get it now. You have seen some news story that told you that all Muslims are somehow trying to sneak into your home or on your lawn and take your Christmas decorations. Hmmm…do you have a source for this? I don’t know of anyone trying to remove anyone’s religious symbols from their private property. Maybe you can provide a source. If you are referring to wanting the government to display religious images on public property, that is another issue. I believe most courts would side with the radical idea of the state not supporting one religion. I know, you want the schools to start their day by having a member of your church lead all students (and require them to believe it) in a prayer to the god you believe is real and no other religious beliefs, or FSM-Forbid, non-beliefs will be tolerated. I know, you want the 10 Commandments displayed in the court house, because you believe all of them are laws that everyone should be required by the state to follow. The problem is, Gary, those silly Forefathers of ours and our “activist” judges have said that, at least in the United States, we just can’t choose just one religion to be sponsored by the state. Sorry. Hey, but I’ve heard there are other countries out there that demand their citizens all follow the same religious beliefs. Maybe you can look one of those up. It sounds like you would fit well. Good luck and FSM-Bless!
Like or Dislike: 14 13
And Gary, you do know that anyone is allowed to pray to as many gods as they choose to in public school, right? It’s just that a school official, being a representative of the state, cannot lead a prayer during the school day, since that would presume all students held the same religious beliefs, and again, our government doesn’t yet require that, which is, I’m sure, quite disappointing to you.
Like or Dislike: 13 13
You do have to be kidding, right Gary? You can no longer have Christmas ornaments up and a manger can’t be displayed on your lawn anymore. Hmmmm….interesting. I can and I do. Just a couple of comments from someone who was raised Lutheran and maybe that’s not as good as Catholic in your eyes. Good Muslims have been “mocked” and harassed since 9/11. And you know what? They are good people, just as good as you. And far more accepting than you. As far as your statement, “christian prayers cannot be part of our schools…” Good Lord, what is there to be said – separation of church and state? Apparently you do not believe in that? What faux NEWS do you listen to? wwjd Gary?…
Like or Dislike: 15 14
Separation of church and state? When are you Liberals going to learn what that means? You act like it means any public building can not be prayed in or have a religious decoration on it etc… That is not the definition. The whole concept of separation of church and state was brought about to ensure that the Federal Govt could at no time wake up one morning and tell the entire nation that they are now all Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, etc… The Idiots that cant handle a simple concept like tolerance demand that no one be allowed to celebrate on or around public property. i for one could care less if they put a jewish, muslim, hindu display up to celebrate a holiday. It doesnt affect me but it might make the other group happy that their city recognized their holiday. And those nasty ten commandments on public property? May as well get over it, our judicial system was set up using those very same ten commandments as a starting point to keep an orderly society, so they actually have a place in our society, not just a place in church. WWJD Alice? My guess is he would slap you silly for invoking his name while supporting the Liberal intolerant agenda. of course you are extremely tolerant when it comes to stuff like homosexuality, just not things that support Jesus’ teachings.

Dont forget, with Katrina, the people in New Orleans were told every day for a week that the dang thing was coming. They chose to ignore the warnings and stick around. The oil spill had zero warning and the govt still stood by rejecting foreign offers of assistance. I think i’d rather explain Katrina.

What hurricane did he stop? What are you smoking.
Like or Dislike: 11 9
Its not about “stopping” a hurricane. Quit treying to avoid the actual context of what is being discussed. The Bush admin has been blasted ever since Katrina for their “slow” reaction time. Within 1 week everything was rolling as fast as possible to assist all the morons that had been previously warned that the storm was coming. you know, the people that you always see on tv claiming “I was born here, I’ll die here” and other BS. But when it hits, then everyone wants help. Obama didnt accept any of the offers for assistance in stopping and preventing the spill from getting worse. The Dutch offered help on the second day and were told that we got it. 80+ days later is a heck of a time to start looking for help. Are you awake enough to understand now? or are you going to put your blinders back on and try to blame Bush for this as well? I guess Obama didnt realize how bad it was because none of the water hazards on the golf courses he was hanging out at had oil spewing from them.
It’s a fact that there is legislation on the books that puts the Federal Government in charge of hazzardous wastes or oil spills. NCP, short for the National Oil and Hazzardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan which was created in 1968. The 1968 plan provided the first comprehensive system of accident reporting, spill containment, and cleanup.
“Once a response has been triggered, the USCG or USEPA “is authorized to initiate and, in the case of a discharge posing a substantial threat to public health or welfare of the United States is required to initiate and direct, appropriate response activities when the Administrator or Secretary determines that any oil or CWA hazardous substance is discharged or there is a substantial threat of such discharge from any vessel or offshore or onshore facility into or on the navigable waters of the United States, on the adjoining shorelines to the navigable waters, into or on the waters of the exclusive economic zone, or that may affect natural resources belonging to, appertaining to, or under exclusive management authority of the United States” . The federal On-Scene Coordinator (OSC) “directs response efforts and coordinates all other efforts at the scene of a discharge or release”
Pretty clear who the top dog should be.
Don’t rely on MSM to give you the details in a neat little package that spells out just exactly how this all played out. Hopefully, someone will chronicle the timeline of events and reactions from our officials. I want the facts, not some glossed over pile of populist garbage.
Even if the media wanted to do a in depth report of the area…they are being held at arms length. Many in media are crying foul…that there has been a coordinated effort to keep the news from the gulf controlled, or they are raising serious questions about the credibility of the reports that they have been given.

Face it, our government is broken. The country is now being run by lawyers.
